Now we just need some more GCA caches...

Re: new GCA android app
I just used the app to find Roaming Gnome.
Bottom line - it worked well and I found the gnome.
I used the app to find the nearest GCA caches, and selected the gnome.
Then I used the Navigation option which calls Google Navigation to guide me to the location.
Then I used the Radar option to point me to the gnome.
It's a bright sunny day in Melbourne today.
Using the phone in these conditions is very difficult (my eyesight is not great either) and the radar is a bit fiddly but it got the job done.
The app performed faultlessly and is very usable.
I'd really prefer a compass needle to the radar, and one with high contrast like a thick white arrow on a white background but hey, it works as is.
Well done.

Re: new GCA android app
I have locus pro on my phone and when I call up the radar it asks if I want to use GPS Status or Locus. Locus' compass is a lot easier to see in low light.gmj3191 wrote:I'd really prefer a compass needle to the radar, and one with high contrast like a thick white arrow on a white background but hey, it works as is.

There's a free version of Locus on the market

Re: new GCA android app
Hi. Would it be advisable to Uninstall "GA Cacher beta" (or for that matter, any app. ) before installing the newest release?
I'm a newbie to Android phones but so far so good.

Re: new GCA android app
no un-install required, just upgrade to new release ..
and I would also recommend the Locus (free) nice compass and map navigation which you can launch from cache details page
ie menu -> Navigate
I'll make a note to add this to the Long press on the list screen too

Re: new GCA android app
Wooohoo.
I used this app to find 3 GCA caches today. At one location the compass wouldn't lock on so it was 20m out, but restarting the app make it lock on. The app crashed a couple of times when it looks like it didn't have a satellite lock, but once the sats came back it seemed to be fine.
Wheeeeeeeeeeeee!

Re: new GCA android app
I didn't have quite as much luck (Or maybe I was just tired as it was the last cache for the day and my battery was nearly flat...)
I arrived near GZ and got the cache page up. I then couldn't get a distance and bearing as I couldn't find the "GPS status" link and I wasn't in the mood for learning locus so in the end I gave up and copied the coords into c:geo...
However, once I had got to GZ (which my GPS though was in the middle of a road) the app was helpful in reading the description (but I couldn't get previous logs?)
But due to an annoying old man watching my every move I never ended up finding the cache...
Something else that would be handy is if the list of caches was sorted by distance from where you are, not where you where when you downloaded them...

If your not connected to the internet it won't...CraigRat wrote:Hit refresh and it will update them
Re: new GCA android app
The previous log is downloaded from gca when you view cache, so you need Internet for this, but I might need to cache this ..Laighside Legends wrote:I didn't have quite as much luck (Or maybe I was just tired as it was the last cache for the day and my battery was nearly flat...)

Re: new GCA android app
I'm not sure what it is, but I can't run this app from my SD Card, it will only reside in phone memory.
Is it possible to change something so it can go onto the SD Card?
c:geo can so it can't be anything to do with accessing the internet or gps services.
The Desire is a good smartphone but it has only a relatively small amount of on phone ram, so its crucial that as many apps as possible go to the SD Card.
Perhaps if I rooted it (if you'll pardon the expression) it would be better but I'm leaving that as a last resort.

Re: new GCA android app
Is this a hard thing to do? I'd be interested to know what the restriction is.mtrax wrote:I haven't got install to SD card supported for this app yet.gmj3191 wrote:I'm not sure what it is, but I can't run this app from my SD Card, it will only reside in phone memory.
