I have just hidden my first two caches and have a question out of curiosity.

I was wondering do most people usually pick a "style of hiding" and only ever hide that style of cache? Or are your hides based on popularity of the style of the hide? Or you’re keen to hide whatever you can?

After my first two hides I imagine I’ll most likely continue hide a similar style.

We generally choose a hide appropriate to the area. Ian likes to hide devious caches when he has time to build them, other times I will hide the largest cache boxes I can in areas that we consider we can show off areas that tourists wouldn't normally see. One thing I can say is we NEVER place a cache just for the sake of placing one, each and every of our caches have had much though of whether the area is worth seeing.

I think most people put out the sorts of caches they would like to find themselves. So there will be common trends. I personally have put out 2 different 'themed' series - a collection of puzzle caches based on vintage computers ("Joy Of Hex"), and a series ("Nontrivial") of multis that require hard and/or long walks through National Park land (but do not involve in physical caches being placed within the National Park land). Plus a couple of one-offs where something took my fancy.

For bush hides I always seek out a rocky spot because I've seen what fire can do to a geocache! Also in the rocks (Sydney and surrounds is blessed with wonderful Hawkesbury sandstone which forms lovely caves and overhangs) there is a much lower chance of damage to plant life.

Nothing beats the sound of plastic or metal scraping against sandstone!

I hate trying to find the sneaky micro but yet I have the urge to hide them? I love the feeling of finding one after it's frustrated me...

lol I was waiting for him to place all of those 26 caches at once when he hit that puddle!

I try not to hid the cache, just leave it in plain view.

I hide based on whatever ideas I have at the time - a lucky find of (almost) perfect natural hiding spot, camouflaged containers based on other finds or found objects, puzzles as revenge for puzzles I've suffered through Variety is the spice of life for me but whatever it is I always strive to do the best I can for any hide, be it trivial or complex. I've got nothing on some of the tricksy and clever cache hiders out there though!

I like Puzzles and Long Caches / Series.. so that's what I hide. I terms of style Id like to say I vary it up. Ammo box here, crafted caches there, normal systema etc.

I think people do end up developing 'styles' when ever I go to a new city, I find my DNF rate soars. Then you learn the local style, and they come more easily. In Sydney I come to expect certain things from certain hiders, and am usually rewarded. Although this can bring you unstuck on occasion when they hide a different one hehe

Big caches in places that I think are interesting. I like a bit of a walk if possible. I've only ever hidden one micro and one puzzle cache and never anything that could be considered "devious". My style is very much what all caches were like when I started 11 years ago.

My style is always the biggest cache (within reason) that a location can support.
