There has been talk about Google Earth, but I don't know if there has been recent talk on Google Maps:

Actually this is very cool. My daughter has only just started emailing her 3rd cousin who lives in England. Until a couple of months ago we didn't even know these people existed, but through a strange quirk of fate, we ended up being contacted by them.

She can now show her cousin where abouts we live in Australia if they keep on zooming out.

The map link from GCA is great! Here's one of my caches. Looks rather cold!

I typed in various strings to find "Dubbo" and it said it 'could not understand the location'. We I don't want to understand it. Just see it from above.

Until recently I had writen google maps off as a bad joke like macromedia flash or as something only for broadband but it seems it works if you wait long enough on dialup and all the cache pins are cool .

The question:
When a map loads the PC sits there for some time without downloading data and a partly built map. Is that due to the PC chewing over some java, maths etc or a delay at the server end ?

For example this map of C@W's cache takes 2miniutes and 25 seconds to load over a 48000 bps connection but it stopes in the middle for a wile.

I have been using Google maps on websites to show people the location of events/activities. Very easy to put on a web page, with some great stuff that you can do with them.
I send people to:
http://www.venturers.sa.scouts.com.au/site/map.asp
and they then email me the data so I can make a map for their activity/event etc.

Have a look at:

and move the small scroll bar under the map.
Really cool stuff.

I have not reached that level yet, but I am geting there.
My idea is that I could show how to get from one place to another, and not necessarily by road but via bush tracks...

My guess is that it's waiting for the server to give you all the map images. There are quite a number of individual images coming down, so your dial up is probably causing most of the delay.

There is some server time at GCA to get the pins from the database, but that shouldn't be too bad.

There is a bit of processing at your end, so if you have a less than stellar PC that will also add to the delays.

Looks like the Google Maps satellite images are the older set - they certainly are for Tasmania - our poor city is covered in cloud still, whereas in Google Earth it's right down to street level on one of Tassie's lovely clear summer days.
