Google maps and GCA usage

Late last year, google announced that soon they will start charging by the use of their google maps ($4/1000 views) above a certain level (25,000 views/day) of usage.

Does this affect Geocaching Australia and it's usage of google maps?

I've only heard one site which was ask to pay, have you got a link to that announcement?
ie does it affect only commercial sites?

The volume of maps we display is well under the limit, so we're not expecting to pay for a long time. We only show between 500 and 1,200 maps per day.

When that announcement was made we ran some stats.

We are well under, but I think this is the reason GC are changing some of their maps to use Bing maps and whatnot

I imagine they would be well over the limits!

A site I am involved are changing. We are not a commercial site but the map is a large part of the site. We are testing MapQuest, with OpenStreetMap and Leaflet.

You have to hit 25000 map views EVERY DAY for 90 days consecutively for them to even consider charging.

We average about 500 or so a day, so no panic here :-)

Might explain why the other site went to OSM/MapQuest. Would they serve up that many?

Yep.

Every cache page has one, and then there's the interactive maps.

With their userbase I would imagine they would be pretty close to the threshold.

Static maps don't count, only ones from the API.

It seems that GC use 2,000,000 maps loads each day.

And yet another reason to use GCA for the superior map functionality :D
