I have just bought my first GPS - a Garmin etrex legend
My fingers are beginning to ache so I'm hoping to be able to download waypoints to it.
There seems to be quite a range of software to aid with this process
Could someone point me in the right direction
Is the freeware stuff good enough?

If all you want to do is load waypoints, I still use EasyGPS. This is probably because it was free and could do everything that I wanted.

Be warned however, sooner rather than later you'll start craving more and better and end up sending money on programs which are fantastic (to those who know how to use them fully- obviously excludes me.) in a never ending spiral.

Ahhh, memories.
If you don't have premium membership the best bet is to upload the loc files onto the hard drive and then import them into GSAK. Use the demo initially, the nag screen is bearable for the first year. If your still caching after a year send off the money because the program is worth it.
If you get premium membership you can then get the gpx files with all the good stuff and inport them into GSAK. by using the PQ feature
If you have GSAK people can send you GPX files with say all caches nearby once a while...
The extra deatail within the GPX format is well worth it when combined with GSAK.

This is great for paperless caching, if you have a pda GSAK can generate html files for the cache pages. If you don't have a Premium Membership after importing the .loc files you can copy and paste the cache page info and the hint into GSAK before you generate the html, but you wouldn't want to have to do this with too many caches. Love the free GPX info for GCA caches!
Another good source of .loc files is http://roblisa.com/geocache/ where you can get files for the whole state.

A lot of what your saying is 'Greek' to me but im sure it will all make perfect sense in time
