Newbie Question - Route navigation on Garmin Legend

Hello,
I have just brought and am getting used to a Garmin Legend HCx and the included instructions are not the best.
When I program a route it doesn't seem to know where I am at the time. Only the route from the first waypoint is shown (and all subsequent ones).
Also when I do approach a waypoint (to within 1m) how do I tell it I am there and to move onto the next waypoint? It doesn't seem to recognize it automatically (like a multi stop trip on my vehicle GPS)
Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated.
