I know it may be still early but I nearly walked over a Yellow Faced Whip Snake on Sunday while doing an 18km bushwalk.<br><br>Anyone else had an encounter yet this year.

We had some unseasonally warm weather at the end of last week in Brisbane. While Orienteering on Sunday just south of Brisbane I heard a rustle and looked across to see a big black snake less than 2 metres away  - I kept running  - didn't stop for a closer look.

You know, thinking about this, I've realised I've been orienteering for 22 years now (not a bad achievement when you're 26), pretty regularly - almost every weekend during the season (admittedly mostly in winter), and I have never, ever seen a snake while orienteering. Ever.

We've had a bit of warmish weather in Adelaide too but I haven't even heard the early spring rustles of skinks yet. Hmmmm.

Young bloke that boards at our place wandered in with a dead snake yesterday. He killed it out in the street. About 6 ft long, he said it was a Taipan. I didnt get close enough to bother checking.

I have been in scouting and general bush walking as well as geocaching and in 58 years I have never seen a snake while out walking. I think they feel me comming and it scares them off.
Seen plenty dead or dying on the road and also a black snake in my back yard.
Hounddog on the other hand has met with quite a few.
We have been told that where we live is supposed to be python central. Still waiting to see one.

The significant other walked past a brown snake at West Head here in Sydney over the weekend just gone. She told her zooligist friend "Don't stop walking...". Which was met with the predictable response "Why not?!" as the friend stopped right next to the thing....

Spotted a 4ft brown snake today only a few hundred metres from the Smithfield Hotel - seen quite a few lizards sunning themselves also, so they're definitely on the move again.

Over the years I have had a couple of snake sightings while walking. One in Canberra many years ago, then up near Lismore about 20 years a yellow bellied black snake. But have never come across one while walking near Adelaide.

There was an article in the paper yesterday though saying snake sightings in the suburbs were way up on usual for this time of year. It has been a very dry winter though which may have something to do with it.

The reptiles & amphibians are definitly out in force in the Brisbane area now. In the past week we've run across a very large python (dead on the side of the road), a very nice blue tongued skink, and last night while doing the cane toad search in my yard I found that the Green Tree Frogs are now out of brumation.

You won't see me blindly charge off into the grass any time soon!

Now that's just plain mean - how dare they bring out a movie like that when we've just started geocaching and the brownies have woken up early (just hope they got enough sleep)

I am soo not going to see that movie. Snakes in a confined area, no thank you, even if they are only on the screen.
