Garmin Software

Post by moocowmedia » 02 June 05 6:03 pm

Gee, i do ask alot of questions....one day i am sure i will be able to answer some on the site myself...

Well bought a GPS MAP60C....it's very nice....

I have oziexplorer for the pc, but no maps on the gps, only base map....are there any third party or freeware maps available for the gps...

I am having a few doubts about the unit i bought, as i think i may have bought something that i will never get full use of....i hope someone can convince me otherwise....maybe i need to get used to it, and give it some time....

You can buy maps for the GPS60c , you need to buy the City navigator Version 6 you can get that from the place where you brought your GPS. the salesman should have told you that before.

I don't believe there are any freeware maps for any of the GPS units.
You will either have to buy them, or "procure" them.
The maps for Ozi and the maps for the GPS unit are not necessarily the same. i.e. don't think you can buy maps for Ozi and be able to download them to your GPS.

There are some free maps available, there is post somewhere on this. I will try to find it when I have time, you could search the forum for maps.

Before I bought my copy of mapsource, I successfully downloaded maps of melbourne by using this site ....

http://gps.chrisb.org/en/main.htm

There is a link to the maps on the menu.

My recollection was there were a bunch of steps to follow, and warnings about destroying the GPS, but in the end it was worth the effort.

We currently use MapSource MetroGuide on our pc and love it. Downloads easily to the Garmin.
However, we are looking at buying a Pocket PC and apparently Mapsource won't run on this. We are now looking for what program on a Pocket PC will work similar to Mapsource.

You could always try the Shutter Spot game that would allow you to use your GPS and use your camera...

Check out

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/tracks4australia/

Description of the group

Tracks4Australia is a group for those who use Garmin GPS in Australia.

Tracks4Australia provides an alternative map set that can be used both with Mapsource on a PC or uploaded to a map capable Garmin GPS unit.

The aim is to provide a high quality map set for all of Australia with a focus on non metropolitan areas. The set will NOT be adequate for marine or aeronautical navgation.

Tracks4Australia seeks contributions of track logs & waypoints from both members & non-members.

Members will all be given the appropriate email address when they join.

Non members cannot post messages to this group but their track log contributions are absolutely welcome. Non members should email track logs to no_spam_4_me@iinet.net.au

Non-members who wish to join should follow the Yahoo process - please include at least your home city & GPS model in the comments, your real name is nice but not compulsory.

Tracks4Australia will never share members personal information, please review the options when you create your Yahoo identity.

We cannot use track logs that have been traced from any map, regardless of whether they are in the public domain or not.
