I can see the merit in where Mind Socket is coming from. There will shortly be umpteen pages within the "General Chit Chat" area of the forum. The only problem that I can see is that if we do go with this suggestion (which I agree with in principle) what happens when the usual tangents start appearing? Do we have the ubiquitous "Big Brother" telling us to get back on topic? Don't get me wrong, the off topic stuff usually great reading and the tangents the same but what (I think) Rog is saying makes sense. Every now and then I want to find out something I have previously seen in the Chit Chat forum that was caching related. You now have to delve through pages of stuff to find that thread. (Or you get sidetracked reading the other stuff). Keep up the off topic stuff but in a different forum would be better.

Tangents in a thread are inevitable. There's currently nothing done about it, and I don't see any need to in future, whether there are 2 areas or 1. Proposition 42A (as I now dub it, coz it sounds cool) is just a slightly more organised way to start topics. There will always be uncertainty about whether threads might be geo-related or not (for example, crazy caption competitions, which are great), but I think the forum users' better judgement is good enough to get close to the mark.

MMMmmm... I cant make up my mind, I see what Mindsocket is trying to do and yes there is a lot of completely off topic threads there (most by me :)).

Normally I would say yes, split it up but then again the forums is no where near out of control now so the fact that maybe it is better to leave it. Its a good mix of off topic geo and non geo.

Sorry for the indecision :P

I want a 4x4 forum in here, and wish EcoDave would stop filling the NSW forum with canyoning notices and use another forum for them... but you don't hear me complaining do you?

Don't give up. At the time of writing this, 51% say create the new area.

Creating the new area doesn't change or restrict the existing area at all. It would just mean that those who are only interested in geocaching chit chat will have somewhere to go. Those who want to read the "off topic" (which, in this context, means non-geocaching) stuff can still read the "anything goes" chit chat.

Cheers,

Split 'em ...
Anything resembling some sort of order would be good in my book.
As this is an aussie forum creating any form of chaotic order or at least the illusion of it would be a step up in forward planning.

I concur - mabey when bigger but for now I can keep up just fine and enjoy the on topic threads meandering on and off -

adds character and not retribution.

In light of the lack of a clear majority, the status quo shall remain. :)

Thanks for your thoughts all, I believe that was a reasonably constructive and positive exercise.

some people put "OT" in an offtopic headline. we find it quite useful because we can skip that thread if we are rushed and come to it later when we have a bit more time
