The Selector

Post by embi » 07 July 03 9:40 am

I've just stumbled across this.

<p>
I think its a great idea and would help people to easily identify some of the features or non features at their cache sites.
<p>
Is there a brainiac out there who can make an aussie one of these?

Looks like a good idea. I know a little php but not enough to do that.

If its a plugin to cachemonkey does it mean we have to use cachemonkey to utilise it?

The secondary site is looking at implementing cache attributes at some point. Not sure if they'll have such a complete set as that site.

However, why reinvent the wheel? That site generates the code and would work for Aus caches too. As for plugging in to cachemonkey, it would be cool if 3rd party apps could parse the HTML that this site creates. It won't become a standard though, since it will eventually be part of the 2ndary site anyway.

Hi All
Have a look at this site I have used these icons on some of my caches before.
Feel free to steal any of these you like for your own use. (Only a few of these are my original creations, most were created by other people for free use and are based on common park icons.) The definitions for each icon are my own suggestions, feel free to customize them to fit your needs. (Though some degree of standardization will make these icons more useful.)

Mainly because things like less than 500ft is not aussie standard measurements but I can live with that. I have no idea how far it is though... divide by 3????

True, but you could hack the generated HTML to have it say whatever you wanted. I'd be inclined to do that anyway since the formatting may not suit everyone's cache page layout.

Can someone explain to me what is meant by "The Secondary Site"? Please? :D

My apologies, it is an ideoism, that is, a term coined by Ideology. It refers to geocaching.com.

The primary site, of course is ideology.geocaching.com.au. ;)

I have often thought why is it called this, but was afraid to ask.

Just one of those nic-names that has stuck.... The thing is the boys George and George, and now the girl,Georgina,don't nessacrily log their finds on the secondary site until some time after the page for the appropiate cache has appeared on their website"The Primary Site"http://ideology.geocaching.com.au/

I'm still confused as to what this code will do? Generate HTML, maintain a database, search for certain attributes?

From what I can see it generates HTML for inclusion into your cache pages so other cachers can have an at-glance overview of the attributes of that cache. The icons are stored at the parent site (in this instance in Texas) and are linked to via the html generated.
