Geocaching Australia Tours have arrived (Beta Tours only)

http://geocaching.com.au/tours/

Tours started at Geocaching Australia in 2011, the first such tourism trail in the world, with the Savannah Way tour. http://geocaching.com.au/tags/view/all/savannah%20way/ At that time the geocaches were collected together by way of a common tag set and were available by running a query to extract the details. http://geocaching.com.au/my/query/gmap/5864 To call them an organised tour would have been generous, but the framework was there to have the first tours featuring geocaches in the world. Since then there have been other collections of geocaches organised into tours including the gold trails at Ballarat and the Eden tour in NSW. The release of the tour functionality at Geocaching Australia formalised the grouping of a collection of geocaches into a tour, with the landing page, maps, lists, GPX and ZIP file downloads making the experience easier for all and sundry to visit an area or region, grab the geocaches and conduct the tour of the area or region.

Check the two beta tours and let us know whether there are any issues. Then if you think you would like to host a tour during our beta test release, let us know by replying with your geocaching name and your tour idea and we'll add you to the beta tour members.

Once we have all of the bugs ironed out, we'll be opening tours to the general community to create.

Thanks to everyone who was involved in the idea, creation, generation and testing of the tour capability.

Would the collections of Lighthouses and Historic Engineering Markers be considered a tour? They do have the relevant tags already.

No, they're not a tour. A tour is region based. Check the wiki link for what the general description of a tour would be. Lighthouse collections are collections. If you had a set of 10 lighthouses around inner Sydney, they could be a tour. 100 landmarks across the country are not a tour.

What is a tour?
A collection one or more geocache listings at Geocaching Australia. They can be any sort of geocache listing with the exception of moveable geocaches (which may move away from your area), locationless geocaches (which by their nature have no set location) and events (which are temporary). Examples are a collection of geocaches that helps visitors to explore your area or region. This is not a power trail, this is a tourism activity to encourage people to explore and learn more of your area or region. Locations such as historical landmarks, heritage locations, parks and gardens for lunch stops, areas of interest like view points or river watches, facts, stories, and anything else you can probaby imaging in your area or region. As long as you list a geocache at that location, be it a physical geocache, a virtual geocache or a history geocache you can include it in your tour.

If you would like I will add you to the tour beta test team. Any number, 5, 6, 7, etc should be fine. It will all be new to you as a beta tester but you should be able to follow your nose (I hope).

Completed J_&_J McLaren Vale Tour on March 15 as part of the requirements for the Idus Trophy. What a great experience. Well thought out placement of caches and great information supplied about each site. An excellent caching experience that we could highly recommend to other cachers, either local SA or visitors.

Well done J_&_J. You have set the bar for GCA tours very high.

Thanks 2y's, glad you enjoyed the caches. We hope to see tours adopted on a much broader scale once the creation of them goes live in the near future.

South Australia now has it second Geocaching Tour: https://geocaching.com.au/tour/gt9

A collection of historic buildings and statues in the Adelaide CBD, as well as one of the best ready-made cache hiding spots on the fringes of Victoria Square.

Not sure where to post this, but as tours are a new type thought I would post here. Can you explain what an 'Ephemeral' type cache is? I found where it is placed for a limited time so is it an event?

It's a cache that is only available for a short period of time (1-7 days).

Interesting thanks for the link. When I searched it only came up with a short answer of limited time and is not listed under cache types.
