iCaching and Geocache Manager for Mac

Post by lemmykc » 13 June 11 12:44 pm

I was recently looking through the Geocaching resources to discover that there is a new Geocache manager program for mac (which is what I use) called iCaching. Looking deeper into this i discover that it is quite new, along with another manager called Geocache Manager. Both of these apps are available to download on the mac app store for around $20 each. I downloaded iCaching and it works like a charm. There are a few bugs (which is to be expected), but I am sure these will be fixed in future updates.

Just getting the word out to all Mac users. I think this is what we have been waiting for!

Appreciate your letting us know about these. There is no downloadable demo for iCaching, and it only runs under OS10.6.6, so no good for me.

I downloaded the Geocache Manager demo - pretty good software, except the cache description box always shows only one line of text. The rest of the descriptive cache text is missing. Possibly a feature still to be fixed, or the demo is crippled.

For the moment looks like I better stick to GeoJournal and MacCaching - neither is perfect, but they will continue to do the job until something better comes along.

The reason I am using iCaching is because our iMac and Macbook Pro both fail to run these programs properly. Actually, they run fine but the only reason I need the software is to load them on to my Garmin oregon, which they both fail to do. I even tried Cache901, but that had the same problem. At least with iCaching, it works. I think that it is pretty good for $20, especially seeing that there will be more to come.

Macbook pro->virtualbox->some windows->gsak
Took me a week to work out how to connect the garmin - don't share your mac drive into the vm.
I tried iCaching and Geocache Manager, and neither of them are quite there yet.

UPDATE: Some problems have been fixed in it, it looks and works much better now.
Direct support of many GPS-devices (eg. Garmin GPSMaps, Etrex, DeLorme PN20,30 and 40).
Lots of other devices by GPX (eg. Garmin Dakota, Colorado, Oregon)
Export to lots of file-formats (eg. Comma separated, HTML, text, TomTom, Nokia etc.)
Export options like maximum number of caches, export waypoints etc.
More compact interface, ideal for MacBook Air users
Custom font for note
Tweaked filter-options
Improved import- and exportroutines

I agree, iCaching is getting close now.
Two things (so far) need fixing for me - It won't export more than 999 caches - the comma in 1,000 seems to throw it off. I'd also like to be able to control the names that child waypoints get.
Oh, and it won't "send" to my oregon, but I can get around that by exporting to a file on the oregon instead.

If you actually read the help section, it says that the 'send to' is for other GPS's like eTrex and other GPS's like that, not Oregons etc. I have found a bug where it gives the wrong difficulty/terrain rating. I am sure that can be fixed easily though.

You're right! I thought Garmin USB meant ant garmin with a usb. Case of read-the-manual required.

Yep, I thought the same thing. When it wouldn't work with my oregon, I read the manual to find out why, and discovered that.

Hi Everyone.
I have started using ICaching on my Mac and am having trouble with gpx files from GCA. These show in ICaching as unavailable and only output to my Oregon as a waypoint.
Anyone know how to fix this? :) :)

It could be one of 2 things,

1) It may not support non-GC caches.

2) Go to http://geocaching.com.au/my/settings and make sure your GPX type is set to Version 1.0.1 (compatible):

Or a bit of both!

Hi Again, I have tried changing GPX file types and have not been able to load GCA caches with description etc at all to my gps. I have tried using both ICaching and Basecamp.
Any good ideas of doing this simply using a mac. My gps is Oregon 650

Copy the file into the GPX folder on your GPS. That works on my Oregon, so should work for you.
