Who doesn't love a good map?
Mapping Our World: Terra Incognita to Australia
I saw this advertised on the side of a bus yesterday and thought "great! I'll go to that ASAP" then I realised it said National Library not State Library so a visit to Can'tberra is in order before 10 March 2014.
ACT folk you are in for a treat!

Re: Who doesn't love a good map?
I saw it advertised on TV!
Excited until I saw the location.
The exhibition is FREE.
Just the $500 airline ticket to deal with.
And maybe a hotel, because there are no direct flights to Canbera on the weekend and it takes half the day to get there.
At least Canberra is do-able from parts of Sydney. The closest I ever got was passing through the airport when my flight from Brisbane was diverted. And when I was in Aulbury Wodonga and thought I was close enough for a day trip until I found it was a 700Km return trip round the mountains.
There is a book ($50 + $7 or $24 postage). If anyone gets one a review please.
If it has quality plates of all the maps I would be interested.

You can pick up Lonely Cache (4.5/4.5) while you are here.Yurt wrote:Mapping Our World: Terra Incognita to Australia

I popped in this morning, despite a booking system to limit concurrent visitors, it was packed! I will try again in a months time or so.

Re: Who doesn't love a good map?
Went along yesterday. Fantastic. Could spend a week there if not for the family! We rocked up on Monday expecting to be able to get in but it was fully booked according to the sign. While it's free they limit the numbers so you should book online if you don't have a lot of time to spare. We got a time of 3pm the next day so returned then. Astounding collection of world maps and it leads you right through the original Ptolemy maps through some sensational Middle Ages maps (the wall-sized Venetian one is phenomenal - it's never been outside Italy before apparently) then onto how the explorers filled the gaps and the importance of chronometers in determining longitude and more accurate mapping. There's particular attention paid to the mapping of Australia of course from the Dutch to Cook and Flinders. There's a surprising French map from the 1500s or so that shows the east coast of Australia long before Cook and it's not a bad approximation, unlike some other crazy efforts joining Australia to NZ. There's even the Willem de Vlamingh plate on loan from the WA Museum. What's fantastic about that for me is that I saw the original Hartog plate that de Vlamingh removed in 1697 - it's in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam which I visited many moons ago.
The other amazing thing about the National Library (well known to Canberrans of course) is the 'Treasures' collection in the hall next door. Amazing stuff from Cook on display along with works of Patrick White and the original words to Waltzing Matilda as they were written and so much more. Could have spent the day there but they were closing!
Don't miss it!
We also went to the "Gold of the Incas" exhibition at the National Gallery which isn't free but also amazing. If you plan a trip to Canberra you must see both.
Also managed to get out and see the fireworks last night. A bit easier from Parliament House than trying to see them in Sydney. Didn't do much caching though. Oh well.
