Have we hit mainstream?

Post by Bundyrumandcoke » 21 February 13 9:35 am

Or more likely just someone trying to make a buck off our backs.

Over the last couple of days, Harvey Norman has been advertising on TV a range of various items, including GPS units. The blurb carrys on that no matter what you are into, fitness, hiking, Geo-caching they have the GPS for you. Note the hyphenation in the name, thats how they spell it on the ad.

For the record, I hate with avengence Harvey Norman stores, and any of their subsiduary companies- Joyce Mayne, Domayne, ect.

Geocaching is copyrighted.
Geo-caching isn't.

geocaching is trademarked not copyrighted.

http://forums.groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=11&
1. Geocaching Trademark - Yes, I did file a trademark for Geocaching. My intent was to protect the name from being trademarked by some other entity, and enforced to remove the use of geocaching as the name of the game. If you check out netsaint.org (great program, by the way), you'll see the result of not claiming a trademark. Fortunately, the game has gotten enough press and the name is now widespread enough where it is unnecessary to protect the name. Therefore I am no longer pursuing the trademark, except as it related to sales of goods with the Geocaching logo designed by Grounded, Inc. You are free to use the word geocaching in any form you like. However, any creative of mine (logo, "you are the search engine" quote) is owned by Grounded, Inc. and me. Feel free to make your own logo and quote for the sport if you like. If you create a fan site and want to use my logo, as long as you have it link back to me I'm fine with it - just let me know out of common courtesy.
He owns the trademark, but I'm WAGing (humorously) that while geocaching is trademarked, geo-caching is not

I guess you would pick up on the word geocaching if you heard it on the TV, other than that - my brain tends to shut itself off when it hears the Harvey Norman announcer, the jingle, or Gerry Harvey whinging about stuff to get attention.

Which is exactly what happened. I was in the kitchen, and I thought I heard the word geocaching on TV. I had to wait, not very long mind you, for the ad to come back on.

I know it's not the correct pronunciation, but I always call it geo kay shing ... but then again, how often do the phrases 'correct pronunciation' and 'American English' get heard

We were looking around recently for a GPSr for our son who is now into meteorite hunting. We heard from a local camping/fishing store that doesn't sell them (??) that Harvey Norman did. We went and had a look and got a good deal on a Garmin Etrex 30. Didn't have to worry about buying online/ebay, warranty availability etc. They had a good range on offer to but mostly sports oriented.
Thinking now of getting something suitable for windsurfing.

I saw an article on the My Sailing web site (Aus) with a full and frank run down on geocaching, and how sailors would be good at it as they use GPS for navigating.

Does this mean I'll have to line up at caches to sign a log?
