Calendar / reminder service (now live)

Post by caughtatwork » 01 January 13 11:36 pm

Over the Christmas break we have been developing a new calendar / reminder service.

The first cab off the rank will be a "Find a Cache on Each Day of the Year" reminder. If (when it goes live) you select this reminder, you will get an email on any day you have yet to find a geocache. This will help remind you that you haven't yet found a geocache on that day, so you should go and find one to help you complete your 366 calendar days geocaching target.

If you have only a few days left, it's tricky to remember which ones you still need to do, so Geocaching Australia will help you by sending an email either to your default email address OR a selected email address for that reminder.

If you have hundreds of days left, you'll get a reminder, but that maybe a little pointless if you get them for every day of the year :-)

Our reminders will only be as good as the data we have, so there may be the occasional reminder for a day you have already found a cache, but Geocaching Australia doesn't have the log.

At the moment, this is only open to Beta Testers and admins. I'm waiting for the 15th of January which is my first "unfound" day and if that works, I'll let it loose for everyone.

Other reminder services can be added as needed / though of / desired by the community.

Enjoy.

PS. If you have no idea what I'm talking about. It's this thing.

To set this reminder service, go to your setting page (from the tabs, hover over My then click Settings).
Look for Calendar Reminders
Click on Set your calendar reminders
Tick the appropriate box.
Set an email address if you would like it sent to an email address other than your default address. If you leave the email address blank it will use your default email address.
Wait with anticipation.

Sounds like a good idea. Will the reminder come on the day you need a find, or the day before?

At 00:11am (give or take) on the day you need to find a cache.
I am loathe to send one the previous day for the next day.
By the time the next day comes around (or you get home from a hard days work), you've already forgotten about the need to find a cache tomorrow.
I appreciate this means you'll get to the office THEN get the email and notice you should have brought your GPS (what! you don't take it to work every day?)

Sounds like a great idea, as we are down to 20 or so days for the year I think, so knocking them off this year would be good, and it's often nearly the next day before I notice the printed paper on the fridge with a gap in the dates, and that's assuming I remember what the date is!

setsujoku and darth trader you both have a day or two coming up. The 6th and the 11th and 9th and 10th respectively. So I've added you to the thingy. Please let me know if you get an email (or if you don't) or if it all goes pear shaped.

Thanks C@W and Craigrat for developing yet another great addition to a great web site.

I have many days yet to find but face the great challenge of having to travel at least 35km for the next closest unfound then more than 70km for the next. ](*,)

Need more caches and cachers in northern Vic/southern NSW. If you can program that into the web site I'd be truly impressed. :D

Sounds like a brilliant idea.
Any openings for more beta testers currently?

Great idea - lousy timing (I completed it a month ago).... #-o

Of course, I guess I could attempt a GCA cache a day (either calendar and/or consequetively). Umm... Maybe next year...

Notification received as expected, and I've even found a cache already today. Though that wasn't hard considering we are on a caching trip through from Perth to Adelaide!
