Darn it, I was looking forward to using the sledgehammer.

Well I don't but you can. Video of you doing it is required though.

Pfft, I don't know how you people can sleep at night after supporting the petrochemical industry by buying all those sistema's that you're going to litter the pristine countryside with.

Me, I'm going to wait for my local pharmacy to collect film cans which I'll reuse and recycle into awesome caches that I'll gently place under naturally-grown sticks beside real trees.

So what if a little water gets in? At least it's natural and the basis of all life on this planet. Unlike some of the life-forms I've found sealed inside sistema's... :-"

So how powerful are the magnets in the hard drives and is it worthwhile dissecting them. I have a few old drives sitting around as well.
Very and yes.
Agreed - and it seems the more expensive/faster the harddrive the stronger the magnet. Laptop drives have thin small magnets, desktop drives vary with a few having only one but most have paired magnets, strong. Server drives can have some serious magnets in the - some require leverage to separate and can be a pinch injury risk - be careful and keep your fingers clear! 8)

Of course, don't open any drive you want to read data from again...

You're likely to need some Torx bits, but some of the old drives have only Phillips heads. The cover is usually removable by several screws, occasionally aluminium sealing tape around the edges, and sometimes you need to remove the electronics board. Once you're inside there's only a few screws you will need to remove to remove the magnets.

Beware of laptop drive platters - although the regular desktop ones are made of sturdy aluminium, the few laptop drives I've pulled apart seem to have glass/ceramic platters which will shatter big time sending shards all over the place. Good for data destruction, not so good for the drive dissecter - beware! :!:

SA has them on special as well. Bought 2x 6 packs for $7.49 which makes it even cheaper to buy than individually!
I can see another Onkas  Gorge Series coming on? Zytheran  style

Woolies have a few Sistema's half price this week (starting Wed 18th April).

I didn't check them all out to see which ones, but there were 7 or 8 sizes on special in my local store here in Gippsland. I grabbed some 1litre boxes, which at half price were pretty good value. :)

And re the HDD magnets: 'How To' video's...? Torx.. bits...? So there is an easier way?? Sheesh... my way wasn't far off the sledgehammer technique :P I'll have to look into these other things that you speak of.
