Which app to use on Android?

Post by ashleab » 22 August 11 4:07 pm

Hi guys!

My partner and I started geocaching last week and are absolutely LOVING it so far! We both have android phones and want to know which apps you use. We've been using c:geo so far (but as some of you may have noticed, it's having issues since the update, not a huge deal as I'm sure they'll rectify it quickly enough??) but we want to know if anybody would recommend anything different. We're happy to pay if it'll get us a great app!

Thanks in advance :)

EDIT: Our main requirement is that we can search for nearest caches when we're out, not have to choose and load them in advance.

I think you got it right first time.
I haven't seen anything on Android that comes close.
The c:geo developer(s) responds to gc.com change stupidity quite quickly.

I second that. While my current work supplied handset is a iPhone, I use a Android handset on weekends or in a tablet, as I don't think the GS/GC.com app even comes close to c:geo.

You can use it while driving along and the map auto updates, and when on a hiking trail you have a breadcrumb trail as well so you can follow the same path back.

Don't waste your money on the official app IMHO.

Oh, and welcome to geocaching

Does it handle GCA caches?

While on Androids, or perhaps specifically my new HTC, do you think it is rather counter-intuitive that you have to wake it up to turn if off? :?

Thanks, Kenny

I'll give my +1 for c:geo
But...
Are there any android apps that have live access to GCA?

What do you mean? I didn't know that my HTC went to sleep... :?

If you're talking about the auto screen off feature, you're really just switching the screen back on, which you have to do to do anything except answer a call.
I've never tried c:geo it with GCA caches. I have them in GSAK and I can put them in my GPS but having got all the close ones, I haven't looked for one for yonks.
Since I do so few of them, it's a low priority for me.
I think GeoBeagle handles them as a GPX import if its a priority for you.

c:geo USED to, then didn't (via GPX)... but it may do again now (perhaps)

GeoBeagle, GeoHunter, Cachemate, GeOrg, OpenGPX do just fine

If you can work out how to use it! :D I've been playing around with the offline maps function of locus and the hardest part is working out which button you want to press!
