So what you are saying is when we make the 2000 cache Nullarbor Power Trail we should make then all moveables with specific rules, clearly numbered to avoid confusion...

The really sad thing is if these existed, I would probably go and do them. I haven't driven along the Nullarbor to Perth for over 20 years.

I havent done one over here in the UK yet... they exist, but not AS stupid long as the USA ones... 50-100 usually... will I? Maybe... but I'd feel dirty afterwards

No power trails in Serbia..but with just 87 caches in the whole country (and only 23 within the Greater Belgrade area) then getting more then a few in a day is an achievement!

I've been thinking of making a "power-trail" up a hill, following the fire trail, for a little while now.

Hmm...and i do own the only cache that is on that fire trail..hmm, how many sistema's would i need?


(P.S. Dont worry everyone. I've been putting this off for ages. The idea of having to climb up that hill several times to get coords .etc annoys me. )

Nothing wrong with cache trails... every few hundred metres to a km along a route at points of interest. Helps break up a long mongrel walk up a big hill which while the summit is the ultimate goal its nice to have a smiley rest stop

Power trails are specifically placed every 161m for no reason other then to be 161m from the next in the series. Hopefully GS revise their policy now. I think the best thing said by one of the fellows in the ET Series discussion was "this is what happens when you try to turn a low impact, low visibility hobby, into a high impact, high visibility hobby." Its not in the spirit and draws unwanted attention to our not-so-secret society of strangeness haha

Oh, and I should mention that if you are planning attacking any powertrail I have some "best practice" tips for you.
It's advisable not to:
1. Stay up until 4am that morning playing blackjack
2. drink your favourite 20 year old Highland scotch the casino was plying you with for free (again until 4am)
3. Buy a video camera from a vending machine at 4:15am as it "will be useful for caching" and a good way to spend your winnings.
3. Eat a big greasy buffet breakfast at 10am - then drive 2 hours to the start of the power trail, with a hangover that feels like someone is drilling out your eyes.
4. Forget to take a warm jacket.It's winter!
5. Fall asleep behind the wheel at a petrol station on the way back to your hotel.

Ahhh, now that the thread has reached 7 pages it looks like we know the answer.

The Nevada Department of Transport (NDOT) had provided permission for the caches to be placed.
That is consistent with the Groundspeak guideline regarding permission.
It appears that there may have been an incident with a geocacher possibly pulling out in front of a snow plow, not causing a collision, but possibly a near miss.
It's also possible that a "geopolice" cacher may have also complained to NDOT about the safety of caches / cachers and other road users along the trail.
Based on safety issues (regardless of which issue raised the trail to the attention of NDOT), NDOT contacted Groundspeak and withdrew permission for the caches in this trail.
The withdrawal of permission is grounds for Groundspeak to archive the caches in question.

It's an interesting situation and one that could have ramifications on the guidelines. According to the guidelines, all caches placed, regardless of whether the land is public or private should have adequate permission. What defines adequate permission seems to be subjective and I would doubt that the majority of caches have any sort of permission. Adequate permission may be perceived to be "public land", "not specifically restricted" so "defacto permission granted".

I wonder (speculative only) whether future cache placements may require more stringent permission to be obtained? The USA is very different to Australia, but the guidelines are world wide guidelines, but I don't know how they are interpreted in Australia for Australian conditions.

It is around riverhead state forest which is a neat spot. Hope to get there and have a go
