Is that a rule? I didn't think there were any rules here. If I want to play the game by finding caches, not signing the log but logging the find online then surely thats ok, so long as I'm playing the game how I want of course.

The caches in question were GC caches, so they have that rule.
The rule about no rules at GCA is how the WEBSITE runs, not how people want you to find their caches.
Don't confuse the two.

Caches listed at geocaching.com are bound by their rules, one of which is you must sign the logbook to claim the find online. Obviously this rule gets bent slightly at times, if the logbook is so wet as to be unusable and so on, but if you haven't signed the book the cache owner is quite entitled to delete your online log.

Caches listed on geocaching australia (this site) are less bound by rules, so you could indeed log the cache online without signing the logbook, even though you may annoy the cache owners.

These are only 2 of a number of different caching sites around the world, each with or without their own rules. Geocaching.com has by far the highest number of caches worldwide, and this site has the 2nd highest in Australia. The other sites are fairly specialised from what I can tell and in terms of numbers and participation are really bit players (not wanting to start any flame wars here if someone loves one of the other sites).

The finds in question have been logged on the geocaching.com site that has the sign the book rule in place.

No, no, no.
The no rules at GCA is that we won't stop you from listing your cache because of rules like proximity, size, age, stupidity, etc.

If the cache owner expects you to sign the log book, then you are bound by their requirement.
The cache owner can set any requirement they want on their cache. If you do not follow their requirement to find and log their cache, they can have your log removed.

Please do NOT assume we are anarchy-caching.com

You must follow the requirement of the cache owner.

No its not OK. Geocaching is a simple thing to do. It is loose in its interpretation. However there are a few things that most people would agree on. Signing the logbook is one. Please don't throw all the red herrings at me.

You cannot play how you want. You can play how you want within acceptable limits. Otherwise you are just another muggle that finds boxes.

Please forget about Groundspeaks written guidelines. Most of them are for their own benefit.

Its interesting that one of the things we as geocachers do is keep the location of the cache intact and hidden from non geocachers. Yet Groundspeak has decided to give away the co-ordinates of caches to muggles. ie preloading GPS units. We as listers of caches on their website have apparently agreed to that. Looks like the muggles are running the game now.

Just to go off topic for a second! Given that the pre-loaded GPSrs are only good for geocaching wouldn't the buyers of these units be considered geocachers rather than muggles?

True enough, you need to follow the owner's requirements. That said I don't recall too many cache listings that specifically say that to log a find you must sign the book, it is just expected that if you find it then you will.
If you do not follow their requirement to find and log their cache, they can have your log removed.
Well, up until now I can't remove a log on one of my caches, except by contacting one of the admins. Though with the functionality being discussed in the other thread that may become possible.

Now if as CO I haven't specifically stated you need to sign the log to claim the find, am I then (morally) within my rights to delete the log if they haven't signed it? I suspect not (and I might have to go and edit my hides).

Short answer from me is its not good for geocaching and no they are not geocachers. There are a couple of threads that I have no idea how to link to that may be more inline with this discussion.

I don't believe it has to be specifically written. Geocachers know what is expected. You are (morally) obligated to know what you are getting into when you join this community of misfits.

I used to think these types of numbers were not possible by just last week i managed 38 & 3 DNF's for the day in Canberra and quite a few of these involved a bit of a walk. I cached from about 7:00 am to 4:30 pm with three meal breaks and managed to keep the interest levels up for the entire day.

Hence with a little planning and a good run I could see 70 in daylight hours a possible target (even for me)

However, normally in an urban environment after about 15 caches all I want to do is go home, there is just so many beside a tree or a micro caches you can take in a day without some other reason to actually be at the spot.

I'm off to register that domain right now! :P

Back on topic, hats off to those who can sign or stamp 100+, 500+ or even 1000+ caches in a day. To them I say:

I've done quite a few 40+ days, 1 or 2 50+ days and I think I still hold the NZ record for 77 caches in 24 hours. Usually there's a bit of planning that goes into these days. The 77 cache run started at 7am and went until 3am the next morning. Most of the other big days have usually only been daylight hours only. It easy to get carried away sometimes ;)
