Nearmap rival to Google Earth?

Fairly high res imagery in the city. Haven't looked further afield. When they get images over time it will be interesting.

One day an overlay of geocaches?

Had a look at Brisbane CBD and while the resolution look better, the photo appears to have been taken lat afternoon so there are a lot of shadows. :?

The photography is more recent, only a few weeks old. Is the intent to provide regular updated photography? That would be an advantage ove Google Earth.

That looks very useful. I think I might start using it for work as well. Google Earth images are frequently over 3 years old. It sill thinks that most of the land in Docklands is undeveloped. Thanks.

It's dated 20 October for Sydney's north. I assume it will be regularly updated. I wonder if they will add past images as well. It looks like there's a sliding scale at the top where you can go forward and back but at present there's only one image. Be nice if the 1943 aerials of Sydney were included as well! Plus all those in between.

Found a clumsy join near my place.

Round my way it is worse than the worst images Google Earth ever had.

I don't think I'll be using it for a while!

+1

The resolution is extremely poor in most regional areas, even worse than the old free landsat images pre-GE. [-(

In our neck of the woods in Melbourne, the resolution appears to be a stunning 1-2cm. Very impressive.

In fact, the house next to us is undergoing renovation, and images taken on 12/10, 6/11 and 13/11 show the construction of the roof in various stages. Fascinating.

The railfans spotted this one:

Interesting that there are several photos (over time) for some sites as the previous poster mentioned. Still only one in most places and the non-urban stuff is pretty bad resolution from what I've seen. However you can get images going back in time. Type in 'batlow' and click the first match. Never mind that they've got it as "Batlow, Vic" rather than NSW where it really is. It's a high Landsat type image but you can look at 2004 (latest), 2003, 2000, 1989, 1980 and 1972. Look at the large dam (Blowering) between 1989 and 2000.

I hope they do this for all maps where possible.

A work in progress we'll have to consider it.

Wow, that is scary clear. So much detail in my back yard.

It's so clear I can see the cache container for

And it's only a black pixel, but I reckon I can also see cache container

(note to self: "I must hide my caches better" )

Only problem is there is no lat/long on the map.

The terrain map looks a lot like the side scanning radar images taken from the space shuttle?

I think there might be legal issues with these images, just check out what you can see in some of our military bases.
..the same bases surrounded by huge signs prohibiting photography. Google Earth is pretty low res compared to this.
Nearmap, you can actually see which direction mobile satellite receiving dishes are pointing..

One of the icons in the Google earth client looks like a Clock, click that and you can adjust the dates in a similar fashion to Nearmap
