Narrowing Down The Possabilities

Post by Sonic the super bird » 08 October 09 8:17 pm

Hello fellow cache collectors,
It is I, Sonic the super bird!

Well, I'll get straight to the point:
Junior was curious about who was the first geocacher and who made it.
Who were the first 5 cachers? Who was the first to 100 caches???
We want to know!
So we were wondering if all you cachers out there could help us narrow it down to the answers and even if you only know a little bit of information (for instince, who told you about this and who started before you) please post a note.

I'll start:
Kmiatae told me about it and I know that Cheesy pigs, Gorbak, nomad_penguin, stealth_ninja_penguin, Snuva and a million of other cachers certainly joined before me.

Thanks,
SONIC THE SUPER BIRD.

P.S. Sorry about spelling if it was wrong, I was in a bit of a rush! 8-[

I stumbled across this YouTube video about Dave Ulmer and what is apparently the first ever geocache...

In what region? World? Australia? Tasmania?

Here's a good rundown on the history of geocaching: http://geocaching.gpsgames.org/history/

A lot of that info is already in the Introduce Yourself topic - at least about us as individuals and how we got into it.

But yes, would be interested in the history of some of the early caches/cachers myself. We had NSW's first ever placer turn up at our last Geocaching meeting here in Sydney.

I believe Lyn Pat and Nathan would have placed WA's first geocache Albany Quarantine. We logged first a GCA listed cache Blair Witch in WA.

Seattle is the home of Groundspeak which may have been the confusion.
Melbourne is the current home of GCA (well our server anyway), but caching in Australia started in Lane Cove in Sydney.
Look at some of the graphs and stats (under Caches or Cachers) to see some interesting history based purely on numbers.

Ahh, don't be fooled into thinking Groundspeak either invented the game or were the 1st website, not the 1st communal place to list geocaches.... Its something not a lot of new players are aware of.........
