Help name our servers!

Post by CraigRat » 12 March 09 7:40 pm

It's getting closer to getting the new servers online!

To distract you all in the meantime I thought it would be fun to get the community to come up with names for the 2 servers.
The server names will just be used internally, nothing most of you will probably ever see, but they need names of some sort

Server 1 will be the public facing server for the website and
Server 2 will be the 'brains' of the operation, holding the database

Let your imaginations run wild (but keep it family friendly :) ).

There may or may not be a prize! hooray!

Totally un-original, but family-friendly:

"Are you thinking what I'm thinking, B1?"
"I think I am, B2!"

A bit OT but I remember seeing three servers in a data centre named Dazza, Shazza and Wazza.

Now, server names:
HAL, dark_side_of_the_moon
ying, yang.
something_something_something, dark_side

Contest judges should note that I used underscores just like a good little Linux admin should. :D

That's a nice idea.

For the Brains - Marvin.

As in "Here I am a server with the size of a planet, and what do they get me to do? Manage databases."

I'd like to see ideology's contributions recognised in these names, since they started the site and paid for its running for all this time.

Trouble is, they're both called George!

(for those who weren't around in NSW when i! were caching, the running gag is that they both call themselves George, even though neither of them is actually named that. I remember one event when George's girlfriend (or was it George's?) was a bit confused at being called Georgina, but went along with it!)

Maybe they'd finally consent to dropping their shared pseudonym and letting us call the servers, [censored] and [censored]?

I would second this.

Hopefully, they have cool names though. Something like Percival, Archibald, Reginald, or Roderick...

It may be a good idea not to use the names of real people, as they may not wish to be associated with GCA!

Loving all the suggestions so far.

how about "find" and "hide"
or "trad" or "multi" and new servers could be called unknown....

or you could go use any name scrambled with ROT13 lol

How about "Dave" the database and "Sharlene" the Server?
Couple of good 'strayan' names. :D

I'm not sure if we are supposed to be voting, but if so I'd add mine to this choice.
