c@w, are the machines booting into any operating system? even if not, you could just install some plain vanilla linux onto it, open up some ports on your router to it and craigrat could ssh in and set up a the full operating system
this is basically how we did it with the current server which resides in texas
Sounds like a plan, the connections speeds of today  bit quicker the original setup.

Googling, burning ISO's (never done that before, made a couple of coasters), learning apt-get, learning about ssh, learning about sudo, installing, testing, trying to get my router to allow remote ssh (failed), upgrading the firmware on my router, breaking my router, 5 hours fixing my router, b0rking eth0 then eth1 on the server, fixing them, finally getting the software installed (well, most of it), then uninstalling some of it, then finally settling on what software to load here and what to load there, then trying to find a reasonable price for 2 additional drives (performance) and cheap courier costs.

I think that covers my weekend (apart from a few hours of caching).

We kept the setup discussions secret only to avoid publicising what they are set up to do and minimise anyone who attempt to use that information to exploit the system.

The machines are almost ready to go to Sydney for installation. I need IP addresses from our host to pre configure so when we plug in CR can finish the install and other wizardry. I also want to pick up two more drives which I should be able to get this week.

Hopefully this week we'll get the machines racked and then we can finish SW install and start testing.

We're on our way, but don't hold your breath, unless you can hold your breath for a couple of weeks.

I would hope for PhpBB3 over vBulletin. Much easier for everyone to adapt to after using PhpBB2, free/open source software has a whole host of advantages over proprietary software, and no subscription fee.

And unknown scalability :-(

In the background we are trying to determine the benefits of a. vs b. so if you have any hard data as to the comparison of each, please let us know.

Anecdotal evidence is not hard data (btw).

Scalability of which system is a concern? Both phpBB and vBulletin can be scaled to handle tens of thousands of posts per week.
