The Long Way Round - TB race from South Africa to Australia

Post by caughtatwork » 26 January 09 12:33 pm

From this poll:
http://forum.geocaching.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=11449

We now officially have a race:
The Long Way Round (The race to Australia's 1st ever Mega Event)
http://www.cachinggames.com/lwr/index.php

The game is now open for signup.
* Travel Bug racers MUST be sent to delboy1203 by 1-March-2009 in order to be placed into the start point in South Africa.
* Travel Bug racers received after this date will not be eligible for inclusion in this game.
* delboy1203's address details can be found by click on the Contact an Administrator link on the left navigation area.
* You must join this game first to see this link.

You now have about 4 weeks to get your bug ready and sent to delboy1203 by 1-Mar-2009.

Enjoy.

I will be setting up something for this.

But just to be pedantic, the page states it starts and finishes at certain times AEST, then shows the time in the top right hand corner. Unfortunately, its not the correct time. Shown in the top right hand corner is AESDT (or AEDT). AEST is one hour later than shown on the game page.

Cheers

Date / time now calculates AEDST or AEST. Thanks for the headsup.

So like other games we don't know the challenges until the game starts. That's fine - I guess we all quickly update the TB page at the time.
All Travel Bug racers entered into a race will have a 'Race Tag' attached explaining the rules and a link to the various challenges as well as these Travel Bug racer rules must appear on the Travel Bug page. You are responsible to attaching the 'Race Tag' to your Travel Bug racer.
Is there going to be a sample tag produced we can laminate and attach or is this our responsibility?

There's no reason to hide the challenges, sorry about that. I've made them all public.

I think you're all big boys and can make up your own taggy thingy :-)

Can a trackable geocoin be entered instead of a Travel bug?

I'm a little disapointed with the Challenges.
<p>
A visit to <a href="http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_de ... e1158">The "Long Way Round"</a> gets a point for challenge 53
<p>
And <a href="http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_de ... 86b6b">The Long Way Round
</a> gets challenge 21
<p>
Surely a cache with that name's got to be worth big points.
But no, nothing special................

PM delboy1203 who might not yet be aware of this thread (even though it's his game). You make a good and valid point and I would be happy to up the points as he decides.

<p>

Just trying to work out which rules need to be posted on the tag, but can work that out.<p>

I am finding the challenges a touch vague though. What defines a "river" cache for example? River in the name, or the description mentions it is next to a river. Is there a distance involved? I think they need to be locked down a bit more.<p>

Also Challenge 7 - logged into the final cache in Australia - which if we go by the name is the mega event cache. So any that make it back will all arrive at the same time. It needs a target physical cache that we can place on the printed rules in case any meet the mandatory challenges and get back before then.<p>

Cheers
:D

Use your judgement in making claims. They are all automatically approved so your judgement is the only call. A check will be made every now and then and anyone caught "cheating" will be DQ'd.

The target cache is listed.

The concept of this game is to have your Travel Bug racer meet 7 mandatory requirement from its release point in South Africa and travel to the 1st Mega Avent in Australia. The target cache is Wagga Homecoming Cache GC1M2VQ

Sorry about the delay. I think the heat has affected my brain - the office aircon is broken!
<p>
<b>Nilbog_Aus </b>> Yes, coins can be entered as well as TBs. As long as they are trackable on GC.com<p>
<b>richary</b> > As long as the cache has something to do with a river, I will accept it. Use a little common sense for the distance involved. I will check the challenge logs on a regular basis and let you know if I do not accept it. There is a final physical cache to be logged into: GC1M2VQ - Wagga Homecoming Cache<p>
<b>Dik</b> >The name of the game was chosen after the challenges were set. As you have no control of your TB once it leaves South Africa, it would be interesting to see if you manage to log either of those caches. I will speak to C@W re these caches.

Point Scoring Scale...

Post by Studit » 29 January 09 3:03 pm

I'm with Dik.

There are challenges with varying degrees of dificulty, and should be scored appropriately. Logging into a difficult cache might mean the TB is not found for some time. You get a point for not moving in a month, but while you're there other TB's could be scoring numerous points. :cry: I would prefer mine to stay on the move but if I got 10 points for a difficult cache and 10 points for not being discovered for a month I would be very happy. :lol:

I say that the scores should reflect the difficulty with the mandatory challenges scoring (for example) 1 or 0 with the remaining challenges scoring from 2 upwards, say 2 to 10 or 2 to 20. :idea:

A scale such as this might create a bit more work for you, but I'm sure you'l find members happy to assist, and since I'm on the band wagon I'll put my helping hand up now!

:? Not everyone will be happy with whatever point scale you come up with. :?

At the end of the day its only a game and regardless of how its scored I will still be playing. The administrators are the bosses and have the final say. If I didn't accept that I wouln't be in the game. 8)

Make your suggestions for each of the remaining 53 challenges and see what people feel.

Suggested Points List

Post by Studit » 29 January 09 5:08 pm

This is a suggested list only, so no abuse please. Difficulty of some caches depends on the definition. Scale of 0 to 20.

I think that we need a point for each move with a bonus points for milestones of 10, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 - 10 for 10 moves, 50 for 50 moves, 100 for 100 moves and so on..
