Not Good.....
This morning in the Sydney Morning Hearld
A MAN playing a high-tech version of hide-and-seek has stumbled across a cache of child pornography buried under a rock in a northern beaches park.
This dates back a month from what it states.
So be aware of what you find, in the past it was syringes and used drug equioment, now this.
Please respect the privacy of the cacher mentioned in the story, I will NOT tolerate speculation of thier identity within the forum, any such post will be deleted on the spot.

Many things you are Pesky, but this I think not But to avoid a knock on the door if I were you I would stop thinkingPesky! wrote:Was it Me? just thought
were they( the bad thnigs) at the set of coords the hunter was looking for?
If the nasties were at the cache coords one hopes that it is not another geocacher But this does open up a dicussion on the other uses for gps.
I have heard of people that grow strange plants in the bush have caught onto gps a loooong time ago.
So maybe sick ass perverts are obviously not techo dumb either .

Why is it such a bad thing who the finder was? Am I missing something, he/she seems to have done the right thing, and should be praised, So why such a big deal about hiding his ID?
On the topic, The use of Dead Drops to Distribute Child Pronography is an old story. I remember living in the UK(About 7 years ago), and they busted a chain in the north that used dead drops to distribute disks. Almost the same as this. The police discovered it after a gardner found the container (Surprisingly under a rock, and full of floppy disks). I remember also that police in New York also busted a similar setup, they thought they were busting a dead drop used to distribute Drugs but found the Pornography instead.
Its going to be hard for other types of Dead Drops to exist with so many geocache's and cachers looking for them (Mind you I would not want to find a drug stash dead Drop).

Just saw that story online. I am in Perth for work temporarily and one of the locally disabled caches has a comment that it appears local youths use the trees in the area to stash stolen goods.
I guess a hobby like ours where qwe do hide things in the bush leads us to find things others hide in the bush for their own purposes. Yet to find a drug crop though!

I have young grandnippers and the thought of this made my writing run wild, sorry to all who read the unedited post!Mr Router wrote:Many things you are Pesky, but this I think not But to avoid a knock on the door if I were you I would stop thinkingPesky! wrote:Was it Me? just thought

"More than a month after the discovery, police say they are still investigating the disks.
When the Herald visited the site, two disks were still buried under the rock."
shock:
WTF?
The police were still looking at the disks??
They didn't at least check out the real physical location or at least observe the area just a little bit?
Because of APEC evidently..
Nice to see we spend hundreds of millions on (ineffective) security theatre and ignore real crimes.. :
Refuse to be terrorised

Because the concerned cacher had requested anominity from the journo, we should also extend the same courtesy here. It isn't very hard to track someone via the "net these days, I have had this demonstrated to me in the past, during a former life....luckdogscrew wrote:Why is it such a bad thing who the finder was? It maybe old news to you, but this is the first time I have heard of it here in Australia, and since our "hobby" operated in a very similar fashion a warning to our fellow cachers seems an appropiate measure.
I have stumbled upon lots of obvious drug equipment since I started this hobby.luckdogscrew wrote:Its going to be hard for other types of Dead Drops to exist with so many geocache's and cachers looking for them (Mind you I would not want to find a drug stash dead Drop).

It's not that hard to stumble upon someting interesting (or otherwise) while searching. Or doing other innocent things - years ago I was bushwalking with friends when we came upon police just finishing removing a small "weed" plantation. They showed us the haul while one of them surreptitiously photographed us, to pad out the report no doubt. Well, that's MY explanation your honour!
Gay hangouts, drug paraphernalia, porn - seen all that while geocaching! Be alert, not alarmed I dare say. Very glad I've never found anything like the subject opener though.
And I rather think that I'd not want my face in the papers for sheer incognition if nothing else.

Its an unfortunate fact of life that if you go looking for things hidden in the bush, you may find things that other people are trying to hide in the bush.
Long before I started caching I knew this - its a problem that has affected orienteers too. Even as a kid my mum told me if I came across any dodgy "crops" out in the forest to leave them alone and get away as soon as possible - lest there be dodgy people nearby or booby traps.
It was orienteers who found the backpacker murders. The best you can do is report these things to the police and then stay well away.
One does wonder what would happen if those hiding dodgy things found a geocache when they were looking for something else. I think they'd be sorely disappointed.
Oh, and see our log for GC1E2 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/log.aspx ... af5f6214b0 for our "things that people don't hide very well" experience.

About 8 years ago my younger brother a mate and their girlfriends were looking for a stray cow that got out of my mates paddock and stumbled on a dead body of a man missing for about 3 months.
Another time I was out fishing up a creek in the pine plantation near my area and stumbled upon a pretty large crop of the funny stuff. Left it be incase there were boobies, i mean booby traps around the place.

The things you find
I've lost count of the number of odd, disgusting or simply weird things I've found on cache hunts. Caching is not a new idea Anyone who wanders around parks and gardens should not be surprised to find other peoples caches. Some of the things I have stumbled across are...
cubby houses, 'pot' plants, porno mag stashes, potato guns, illegal rubbish dumps, illegal rubbish dumpers, headless birds,etc,etc,etc...
BE careful out there people!
Sometimes I even find a geocache
