For the reduction in pirates to be causing the increase in global average temperature, the three conditions for causality would have to be met.

A. Co-variation of events.
It would appear from the provided information that as the number of pirates have decreased, that the temperature has been increasing. However, we don't know that if the number of pirates increased if the temperature would again decrease.

B. Time Order Relationship
Did the beginning in the reduction of pirates precede the increase in global temperatures?

C. Elimination of plausible alternative causes
This is where it all fell in a heap...

Stats exam tomorrow....

As a non statistician, but social scientist (history geography and politics) that appears to be a poorly constructed graph; in that, at first appearances, it makes you think that the number of pirates is increasing with global warming.

While obviously the number of pirates probably has no effect on global warming, the inverse can not be assumed. Warmer weather should actually increase the number of fair weather pirates.

Also I query your statistical basis for the number of pirates. Depending on your definition of piracy, there are probably more pirates in existence around the world today than at any time in the past. They just tend not to advertise their existence as flamboyantly as those of the past.
