Lat / Lon search

Post by leek » 21 April 03 7:35 pm

I sent them an e-mail asking if it was possible to search on lat/lon and they sent me a polite reply saying that the idea had some merit and they would add it to their list of planned enhancements for the site...

Must be something in the air... I asked if they could change the lat and long display on the status bar to atleast dd mm.mmm format, or give the option of which way to display the lat and long. My way of converting to dd.dddd from dd mm.mmm doesn't seem to work too well and I end up a few kilometres out...... Also does anyone know if they are usingGDA94 for their Datams? or still on AGD66? if they are using using AGD94, according to the series three maps, there is no need to convert to WGS84.

How do you convert decimal degrees into degrees and decimal minutes? the only way to do it is to take the decimal of degrees (ie the .dddddd) and keeping the complete degrees. then multiplying the decimls by 60, this will give you decimal minutes. For example
37.983628 degrees
keep 37
0.983628 x 60 = 59.0208'
therefore you have
37d59.0208'

To return the minutes to decimal degrees, simply divide the entirety of the minutes (and deimcals) by 60 and whammo you have decimals of a degree.

this is as accurate as you wish, only limited by the number of decimals supplied in the decimal degrees.

Hope this helps

Thanks, I was roughly working it out..... just on 6mins = .1 of a degree... but was still getting all wrong co-ords.. i think I was just plotting it wrong somehow

That could be a bug.
http://lpi.nsw.gov.au/maps/topoweb.html does not make any mention of passwords.

Stay tuned.
