Greatest distance between caches?

Post by tolmh » 08 March 04 12:51 pm

Which two of your finds are furthest apart, and what's the distance between them? This calculator might help:

Latitude/Longitude Distance Calculation

Use the 'option 3' input mask (eg S 35° 17.555 E 149° 03.885 becomes 35 17.555'S 149 03.885'E).

In the absence of some clever code that'll compare each of my finds to the others I've been trying by hand. The best I've come up with so far is 13,238.6514 km between Dante's Peak (Canberra, ACT) and The Pyramid of the Sun (Mexico).

Shortest line between points only - no drawing a line through South America and Africa to link caches in Bondi and Penrith ;)

Heres one for you tolmh. 2 caches that I have done (with a twist) are What in the world in Panama and my most western cache in Oz Borderline NT/SA border. A distance calculated at 16066km using that link you provided. Using mapsource to plot and calculate the distance it come out at 16061km.

Like I said there is a twist but thats another story.

An interesting question tolmh...

Two things to report on this front...

My two finds that are furthest away from each other are probably Din Lligwy on the island of Anglesey in Wales and Breathe in NSW (whose precise location is a secret, but it would be approximately 17127kms from the Welsh cache... )

I also have placed two caches which are almost as far apart: Circles in North Wales and Patience in Sydney that are 17098kms apart...

Now I just need to get over to NZ to increase the distance on both of the above... And maybe I'll get to Ireland next time I go to Wales and even further increase it...

I guess this is a little off topic, but the furthest I have travelled to complete a single cache would be about 600km to do A-Z Canberra Tours. That's including a few wrong turns, but with 26 waypoints located around the ACT there's bound to be a few mishaps! (By the way, that doesn't include the distance travelled from home to the first waypoint!)

I was hoping to hit five figures, but alas I score 9247.1971 km, between CanChanh Palace in Hue, Vietnam and Hokitika Gorge, South Island, new Zealand.

Would love to get that cache in Antarctica. That would add some kilometres.

And of course we all know that the earth is an oblate spheroid - right? 8)

Both Slider and I have been pretty lucky with our combined travels - our total was 18994.9259km ... GCA094 in Christchurch and GCCC6B in London. About 800km more than EcoDave 8)

Looks like the optimal could be Scotland / NZ South Is ...

From about.com:

*** The circumference of the earth at the equator is 24,901.55 miles (40,075.16 kilometers).

But, if you measure the earth through the poles the circumference is a bit shorter - 24,859.82 miles (40,008 km). This the earth is a tad wider than it is tall, giving it a slight bulge at the equator. This shape is known as an ellipsoid or more properly, geoid (earth-like). ***

So I guess the largest obtainable figure here would be somewhere around (or just under) 20,037 Km, if you can find land on opposite sides of the planet, and then find a cache there.
