Could we have greater accuracy?

Post by The Spindoctors » 01 March 04 8:35 pm

Found this article tucked away in the OZ.

This should be a win-win for geocaching as well. Should we be more cunning in hiding them?[/url]

Greater accuracy? from Galileo, just depends on how much one is willing to pay!

Cheers, Kerry.

I try not to wonder about Pesky. Makes people around me suspicious when I walk around smiling a lot.

Hopefully we will see SBAS (space based augmentation system) in Australia before too long. (aka WAAS in the US, EGNOS in Europe, and MSAS in Japan.)

This is a geostationary satellite system that provides correction information for the LEO GPS satellites. Kind of a D-GPS, but from space.

In theory suitably equipped receivers (e.g. newer Garmin eTrex) can pick up the signal from the Japan satellite, but Australia does not provide correction data to the satellite, so the data is useless from here. The plan is that this system will one day provide global coverage by adding a couple more geostationary satellites.

The way it's going, maybe Gallileo will beat it into the sky. (Well, at least into our skies anyway.)
