Is the price of Petrol/Diesel, Killing your caching.

The price of petrol at our local servo is now $1.37 a litre. Diesel is not much better.

We love to get out and cache all over NSW but lately, we just cant' afford to go to all the places we want, and we tend to cache much closer to home these days.

How about you, are you finding the high prices are limiting you area of reach.

I'm starting to notice it having an effect.

I live fairly close to work so we'd go through a tank of petrol usually in a fortnight. But last week we went through a tank in a week due to additional caching milage.

I think we'll just have to make better use of normal journies, assigning caches to find on the way or at/near the destination.. rather than specific caching journies.

I figure that a 10c increase in cost of fuel (Diesel in my case) on an efficient vehicle (Turbo Pajero that consistantly gets better than 10l/100km) adds an extra $1 to a 100km trip

I have been fortunate to afford the luxury of travel, so an extended trip to Rockhampton or Townsville (300+km one way) adds around $6-7......not enough to effect my caching trips.

I'm sure it affects some cachers more than others, just as an interest rates increases affects mortgagees.

The increasing cost of fuel has not yet affected our caching trips.
What it does affect is other aspects of our travelling,

We now avoid staying in caravan parks ($20.00 to 30.00 per night)
We camp bush wherever possible.

We avoid buying take away food, counter meals,ice creams, coffee and cake etc.

All this money goes into fuel, and not the local economy of where we are visiting.

Our vehicle has a 1200km fuel range, so we fill up at home where it is cheap and don't fill up in the country where it can be very expensive.
ie I filled up in Seymour at Easter for $1.14 per litre,
The cost of diesel in Tumut and area was $1.36 per litre!!!

We still have as much fun, but spend alot less whilst away.

After just doing an 1800km round trip, we say hang the expense! it's fun.

I have two things that I do to make the cost of petrol a little bit easier -

1. I enter as many competitions as possible that offer fuel cards as prizes

2. Our credit card has a rewards system. I always redeem fuel cards from this. I actually keep track of our fuel spending (don't ask, I'm a money/organising freak!) and this year alone I've redeemed $75 worth of free fuel.

Don't forget that fuel dockets can save you up to around $2 a tank with a 4 cent voucher and more with a 6 cent. Instead of doing one big grocery shop and getting 1 voucher, do several $30 + ones and get numerous vouchers

You can also buy fuel vouchers on Ebay if you don't buy a lot of groceries. Here's the link to the category they are in

You obviously pay something to get the voucher but in the end, every little bit counts.

There are also often Fuel Cards up for auction on Ebay that go at least for $10 less than what they are worth. Again, $10 saved is a good saving.

I bought a slab or 4 of beer the other day at a BWS and when one of the office girls was reconciling the accounts she said: This gets you 20 cents a litre discount !

Yes: 20 cents a litre!

Shame I run a fuelcard system and cant use them! So if you do shop around you can get substantial discounts!

I find I tend to coincide a country caching trip now with a work trip that takes me at least partway to make me feel better about the fuel costs!
Were currently using anywhere between $600 & $1200 a month
