What IS it you do?
How do you refer to Geocaching when talking to others?
PS: I deliberately left OBSESSION out!

Then I can't answer the question I only describe it as an obsession!homedg wrote:How do you refer to Geocaching when talking to others?

I thought Hobby and Pastime were pretty close so I looked them up in the dictionary to see how different they were.
Hobby - a pursuit outside one's regular occupation engaged in especially for relaxation
Pastime - something that amuses and serves to make time pass agreeably
So, given the lack of relaxation I've had wheezing up mountains, sliding down banks, getting scratched by blackberrys and straining to look under objects that shouldn't be looked under, I think I'll go with pastime

To us it is a high tech game that encompasses many attributes - such as adventure, sightseeing, bushwalking, using high tech equipment etc.
We don't consider it a sport, just like we don't consider bushwalking or bike riding down a bike track a sport. There is some physical exertion involved, but that is not the main emphasis of the game. There is some competitive element involved, but that is not the main emphasis of the game either.
We don't consider it a hobby - that sort of implies stamp collecting, building model airoplanes and crafty sort of things.
That was btw one of the first questions we asked when we started this game and we really didn't get a conclusive answer.

What about addiction?????
In the years since we have been away from the "big smoke" - I still cant break the habit of:-
1. getting up
2. making breaky whilst waiting for the PC to crank up
3. Checking where the latest hides are - AND hoping beyond hope that some kind person just might have placed one up here
Sad isnt it? I am sure I cured my chocolate addiction quicker than that!
Thanks to Bear Left - you saved me the trouble of finding our dictionary to decided between Passtime or Hobby as my second choice

After 100 caches in the first 50 days, I think I'm definitely in an obsession phase. Really loving the new places it has taken me and the family, but I'm also aware that the nearest caches are getting much further away. That might change things a bit, particularly once Daylight Savings ends. When the days get shorter I hope caching remains as an interesting and challenging family pastime, enjoyed when time avails. (Must resist developing an addiction that consumes my lunch-times !)
On a related note: having found a few Romax caches in Bendigo recently, I think their inventive creation of caches could almost be classified as a hobby. So I guess it means different things to different people - at different times!
Hey, what's a "Pusuit" anyway?

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction Bear_Left. There are over 120 in entries in Google that mention "pusuit" AND "geocaching" together, so it's all sorted now. Sticking with pastime.Bear_Left wrote:Google has over 61,000 webpages that can tell you!Mr Emu wrote:Hey, what's a "Pusuit" anyway?
