The European-led Galileo system is talking about <1m error, or <10cm with ground-station correction. A combination of Navstar GPS (the current Yank system) and this should give some improvement over the base 1m number, so I guess <50cm error is reasonable to expect for a hand-held receiver.

Add in a ground-based differential signal (either via direct radio or over an Internet connection) and the error should be smaller than an ammo box!
