Want a free travel bug?

Post by The Spindoctors » 05 December 06 11:55 am

Just been listening to Podcacher which has a good interview with Groundspeak. In it, they mention a global promotion in conjunction with International Diabetes Federation.

They are giving away 20 000 special TBs to be released around the world. There is no postage required.

You don't get to keep it, just release it.

So they way I read the application form they want my geocaching.com username which is fine by me and my password as well.
What the f%$#^do they want my password for?
(Ok, its for valid groundspeak user verification)
Is it stored securely?
Is it transmitted securely?
Do they understand how stupid this is, asking for anyones password?
Good security model..NOT.

For any others who would like to take part you can temporarily change your password, submit the form, and then set it back.

Those ones are easy. As Zytheran says, I wonder why they want our geocaching password - maybe to confirm we are registered before they send them out. <p>Unluckily I don't see any standard privacy guarantees etc that they won't use the details for marketing etc.

Yep, that's what I was thinking is the most innocent reason. Not that I would have problem with spam from them as opposed to the usual crap I get. The problem is I wouldn't trust people who ask for a password they are not entitled to as far as I could throw them. You simply don't do this!
This is a list of passwords that can really piss people off if it is not kept secure and then misused.
A very poor authentication method IMHO.

I don't think so.

Groundspeak hosts the web site.
This should have been spelt out on both websites.

The exact same thing stopped me from signing up. That and the lack of a privacy policy.
