Caching Topics A to Z # 23 WGS84/Deg Min.Dec/UTM

Post by Mix » 16 October 06 8:16 pm

Wiki
WGS84 stands for World Geodetic System 1984 datum.
Most countries have developed their own reference frames over time. Unfortunately each datum is slightly different. WGS84 is an agreed worldwide datum which allows people to use the same coordinate system anywhere in the world. This makes it very useful for aviation, shipping, and of course, Geocaching!
DDD° MM.mmm' - Degrees and decimal minutes - used in geocaching

UTM - Universal Transverse Mercator - UTM would be a better system to use for geocaching, because it's more accurate and, being based on the metric system, it's better suited to terrestrial applications. However, even though geocaching.com lists UTM as well as Lat/Lon, very few cachers or waypoint management programs seem to use it.
The first two are the norm, I know of one cacher who uses UTMs most of the time,

Did you set it wrong when you started?
Have you ever used other than the norm as part of a puzzle or for a change of pace?
If you see a cache by a noob with no finds do you worry about this?
WGS84 makes sense for a world wide game but why Degrees and decimal minutes?
UTMs are good for manual mapping from the GPS to a topo or street directory so why donÂ’t more people use them?
Other thoughts?

And why is it that when I went to Greenwich, the GPS showed E/W 00.0000,
but I was about 60m from the official meridian  :?

It's a Garmin. You shouldn't expect too much accuracy from a Garmin.

Yes. Yes, I do. I worry a lot, and I have a close look at the map, and I ask the question if it doesn't look too kosher.

So, if the odd cache with the wrong datum slips through, I apologise, but it could happen a lot more often! :)

CRAP! - Are you really supposed to use WSG84. I been using 66. No wonder I can't find any straight away and my search circles gets a radius of 200 meters. It made the first 100 finds bloody hard.

Should I adjust my hidden caches or just a a star of difficulty?

No, but it can be easily done & the format the datum is in needs to be stressed very highly to new cachers.
If you see a cache by a noob with no finds do you worry about this?
Yes, enough to not race out for the FTF.
UTMs are good for manual mapping from the GPS to a topo or street directory so why donÂ’t more people use them?
Because I don't use my street directory to navigate & all my electronic devices just work in deminal degrees.

A tool either on the site or linked to from the site to convert between common formats would be useful.

Hey! I use a Meridian! (Magellan Meridian Green)
Are you calling me a creep just because I made that crack about Garmins?

We used to use UTM back in the old days, when UTMs and Sydways street directory were the only way to find the nearest street address to the next waypoint. (The "Ecodave" method!)

Nowadays, with a mapping GPSr and TomTom on the Palm speaking the directions, the street directory doesn't get used all that much.

Hooray for Metric! What's with USAn's and their attachment to the Imperial System?!
Though I don't seem to have a UTM option on my etrex :?
