I think we can do better than that, I mean we may never agree on an answer butÂ…

For me it's a hobby, but I can certainly accept that some people approach it as a sport. I think it depends on how much energy and enthusiasm you put into the finding of caches, as to how you'd classify it.

It could also be called a Game, or an Obsession.

Personally I would consider it a hobby, as it does not have the strong regulatory structure, or well defined rules and regulations of a "sport". Also, I suspect that most of the people who are not in in for the competition wouldn't consider it to be a "game". Sure, there are game related components of it, but, as seems to be the rule for geocaching, it is all in how the individual chooses to interpret it.

Hobby; Sports need some sort of defenition of "winning".
Some chase numbers, others fun or hard caches but no one ever "wins".
You could say that finding the cache is "winning", but are the next 200 people who find it also the "winners"? Sports just don't work that way, one person or team wins and the others just lose in a diferent order.

I guess if Geocaching is a sport, it is the Special Olympics

If you compete against other players (finds, FTF, etc) then it's a "sport".
If you just do it for the fun of it, it's a "hobby".
For me Geocaching started as a hobby, became a sport for while, and is now a hobby again.

If fox hunting is sport, then surely cache hunting is sport.
It's just that cache hunting is more humane

Addictive hobby that makes you wonder what you were doing with all your time before you started geocaching!
