TYPE OF GPS TO BUY.
TYPE OF GPS TO BUY.
I am looking for advise on the best type of gps to buy.
Have thought about either a Garmin Etrex Vista with or without colour, or a Magellan Meridan Standard Gps. Any suggestions or perhaps another brand or model. What is best suited for geocaching. Currently using a Magellan 310 but having trouble finding GZ.

Generally, ANY gps is fine for geocaching.
The most common 'mistake' made by new players is having the Datum set wrong in their unit
Best procedure is:
Check the Datum in the units settings, if it is NOT set to wgs84 continue:
Delete all geocaching waypoints
Change Datum to WGS84
Reload your Waypoints
If you change the datum on a lot of units without deleteing the old waypoints, they MAY still have an error in them

Oh!chase'em wrote:I have the gps set for wgs84. But as the gps 310 only allows xx degrees and xx minutes to two decimals points gz usually ends up being about 20 square metres.
Well, I'll amend my answer to 'most GPSrs that allow more than 2 decimal places'
seriosly, anything form a Garmin Geko or Etrex to a Magellan Explorist etc would be fine for geocaching!

Hmmm may have to appeal to her fishing abilities...(And yes she does manage to out fish me as well...)CraigRat wrote:but but but, you NEED one to get HER to the, umm, tourist destinations when you come to tassie....yeah...tourist destinations...that'll work...swampgecko wrote:I am watching this thread closely as my steam driven GPS fell appart on me on th weekend, two pieces.... In the end it all comes down to personel choice, Example i went with an etrex legend, I did this for two reasons, first i liked the unit and had heard better things about garmin when it came to warrenty issues, secondly the SES unit i am involved with brought 5 or 6 etrex legends, so by getting the same model i am further ahead of some of my unit members when it comes to navigating with the GPS.
