Helpful Hints for Newcomers

Even during the day this can be a useful tip, if the cache you are going for isn't close to the road and on an obvious track from where you have parked. I have often come out of the bush a couple of hundred metres away from the car and had to guess which direction it is in. And due to tree cover often making the breadcrumb trail hard to follow back.

Even though I have a borrowed GPSr (thanks Snuva its heaps of fun) I still like using a Silva compass and I have just bought some topographic maps. The Silva compass makes me look around and to take more notice of where I am. SO do binoculars.
Other useful things to take are guides to plants (is that plant going to kill me?) and guides to birds and reptiles (how long will that creature take to kill me?).
Take leather gloves to prevent splinters.
I take my GPSr's as well, that is my Grubby Place SpottR's. My 9 year old son has found more caches than me....

We use the tennis ball trick a lot and have found that a frisbee doesn't really work as it tends to land way way way away from the GZ when left in the hands of a child.

My last hint is when ca(ys)hing with kids then either finish at a park or finish with a tantrum.
My really last hint is to have fun.

Hi All,
I was looking at peoples names the other day and you can do things like search for all names in states and country's etc..
For the love of me i have no idea how to find it again, can anybody help?

I read about members who brag about finding 350 caches in in 350 minutes and I think "Why"?

Good day all,

first time posting but I thought this would be the best spot rather than start a new thread. Just new to the sport although did a lot of orienteering years ago and always enjoyed a good scavenger hunt.

Just started finding caches at the weekend and logging them - the one question I have that I can't find an answer to here is a GC vs GCA one. Nearly all the caches I look up seem to be on GC so I have logged them there, however the count doesn't register here on GCA. I've logged one on GCA which was listed here but all the others are listed on GC. Not knowing anything of the politics of the two organisatons and websites I was wondering if there was a way to combine the records without entering twice. Actually I don't see how you could log a GC cache on GCA.

Not that I'm going to get obsessed with cache tallies (I hope!) but it would be nice to know.

In general GC logs can take up to a week to be processed across.

Your logs from yesterday should be here in a day or two.

I see that on the left hand side of the forum under the poster's name the "GCA Found" count is relatively low for experienced geocachers - assume this count refers only to GCA caches and not GC.

100% correct. This is GCA only find / hides.
If you go to http://geocaching.com.au/my/settings/ you can Update Forum Stars to get your latest / combined stats total in there as well.

Another question - I guess this is the place rather than start a new thread every time!
There is a series of 5 GCA caches near me that have a symbol of a green triangle pointing to the right. I can't find out what this means but as I learn more I assume it means "needs archiving" maybe.
