xp networking

Post by acts2youthgroup » 18 January 06 7:30 pm

This is one for all the pc experts out there. I have two computers both running xp, they are networked wireless. I can veiw files from both machines. I have a 56k dailup net connection and I want my other computer to be able to share the net. I have had this woking once, but have not been able to get it up and going again.

So this is a big helppppppppppppppp

Haven't dealt with a wireless network, but gernerally you need to modify the LAN connection settings on the PC without the dialup connection, modify the TCP/IP settings to set the default gateway to the other pc's IP address

The on the pc with the dialup connection, you need to go the the Advanced tab of the properties of the dial-up connections and enable Internet sharing.

Hope this at least get you in the right direction

now i remember why i love adsl so much. not having to spend endless hours screwing around with ICS or sygate :D

as a starting point, take a look at your dialup settings, and check that ICS is enabled.

Oh yeah, and make sure you have service pack 2 on the machines, makes life a bit easier again

Since both computers are windows XP it should be quite simple. if you go to the properties of the dialup connection, you should find a check box which says something along the lines of "I'd like to share my internet connection with other computer on my network" Check this box and restart the pc and then connect to the net.

On the other computer, run the network wizard and select the option to connect to the internet from another computer on your network.

Jobs done. (we hope)

Go to the computer without the internet connection, open a cmd window ( Start -> run -> cmd ) type 'ipconfig /all' (without the quotes) at the prompt and copy the results here. ( click the C: icon at the top left, select edit -> mark, left-click mouse over the text to highlight it, enter to copy)

How many other devices are in your or indeed the next house(s) runing on the same frequency. It may pay to put the units side by side until it's configured. I have also heard* there is a bit of a community wireless networking thing happening in your general area.

*Heard some Amateur Radio operaters in the area talking about it on my scanner.

From the first post, the two computers are 'seeing' each other - I would be more inclined to check the second computer's network configuration to see if if it has a default gateway and check where it thinks the DNS is. Hence my request for the ipconfig output.

Interesting subnet range! Allows approx 65,500 computers!

This could reallly stuff things up but to start off I would ...

On Nesa

1. Click Start, select Settings, select Network Connections, right click over Wireless Network Connection (??) then click Properties

2. Select Internet Properties (TCP/IP) then click Properties

3. Select the option to Use the following IP addresses
IP Address 169.254.121.234
Subnet mask 255.255.0.0
Default gateway 169.254.181.234

4. Select the option to Use the following DNS server addresses
Prinmary DNS 203.194.56.150
Secondary DNS 203.194.27.57

5. Click OK

6. Click OK

That's normal Microsoft auto configuration. They use a class b netblock.
If there is no Dhcp server available I usually set up the addresses manually somewhere in the 192.168. x/24 address space and then set up the DNS and gateway addresses. That way the auto configuration won't blow them away.

The main reason this one wasn't working is that Nessa doesn't have a default gateway and DNS servers. What C.A.S has suggested will work.

Just so you know what is going on, the gateway address is the IP address of the network adaptor on the machine being used as a router that is on the same subnet. In this one its 169.254.181.234.

The PPP adaptor settings are a bit strange, unless you have a static address, rare on a dial up modem line, I would have expected Dhcp to be enabled.

On a wireless network, unless you want to share it with the neighbours/friends, I would set it eric-668124cb68 to use the ip address 192.168.1.1 subnet mask 255.255.255.252 (no gateway set) and nessa with ip address 192.168.1.2 subnet mask 255.255.255.252 gateway 192.168.1.1 primary dns 203.194.56.150 secondary dns 203.194.27.57

This will only allow those two ip addresses to communicate.

Also with you should be using a wep key and if you want to be pedantic, I suspect there may be setting to only allow packets of specified MAC addresses
