Incorporating several people's comments - what about the GCA logo, being held up by a roo and emu - with 'geocaching australia' underneath and the southern cross hovering above (Note that I'm completely talentless - despite once being a graphic designer when I lived in London - so am tossing this idea out verbally so in reality this might look fairly shocking!)

I think it's a good idea, as long as they were easily identifiable as something other than just a swap as interesting coins are common swaps. What if they were set in something - wood, plastic, I don't know - and that 'something' could have the tracking info on it? I used to know someone who set Aussie pennies in wood and sold them as key rings.rhinogeo wrote:
What about using these as GeoCoins

All depends on the cost to put identification marks on them for tracking, I suppose

I think for them to have world wide appeal and be marketable in the long term they need to be actual geocoins, consistent with all the others.
The penny idea is OK, but I doubt collectors would consider them true geocoins.
I looked right into all this early this year and there seems to be no advantage to having the coins made in Australia - they were considerably more expensive and were being done offshore anyway.

To add to the above.
The manufacturer in Perth would normally do about 250 coins. Over 300 he sends offshore. China I believe.
Also having taken him a Geocoin that has been done in the US he was impressed with the work and style they were using. He admitted that he could not produce the same sort of affect. Had something to do with demand etc. A second manufacturer was quite willing to quote but again restricted the coulour to a two colour enamel type finsh that didn't have the same impact. We gave them the cachingplace website to look at the style of thing we wanted and both admitted to not be able to prduce the same. Similar perhaps. But no photograph type coin. Th eepoxy surface only on one side. No 3 d effects.
If anyone has found out different we would be interested in who.

The poll
OK

Since there is always going to be grumbles about poor design, no matter what the final product is I will set up a poll for the design elements.

Check for a new thread for the poll only

Adding my 2c worth to the thread...

Perhaps in time, there could be an annual "national" coin, featuring a different animal or uniquely australian feature and/or a state/territory based collection
-
For the front of the coin I prefer the year and an australian animal

For the rear of the coin I prefer option 2

I think the southern cross is preferable to the flag if this is incorporated in the design

Latest Designs
Well after some of the replies and the poll results so far I have refined the design a bit

Here is the Platypus and Southern Cross as sugested

And a 3D Kangaroo design

I will probably do any animal selected as a 3D design for the front of the coin

how about
... or even better "Land of the Southern Cross" AKA GCRHVA - see this.
clear skies, TeamAstro
(PS, I love the platypus and Southern Cross design (it flows well), but the roo and the Cross is probably the most distinctive design- surely this has to be it. Could you reverse the roo so it's tail went under the cross and it was jumping to the left, ie west???).
(PPS -10/10 for the asterism shape of the Southern Cross here on the coin above - you have included the little 5th star epsilon Cru - often missed. Well done.)
