Would a geocacher really do this?

For all your general chit chat, caching or not.

Would a geocacher really do this?

Post by Webguy » 23 November 05 6:32 pm

On Sat the family did 2 of Tangles new caches, one of which was Lair. It was in a cool location, and, it had a rather unique looking birds nest within...

Image (Odee Mcpodies log pic - sorry about the rat in the picture)

Now, today i see an note posted for this cache today by Tangles as below...

"Well we seem to have a big tough geocacher amongst us. Checked on the cache today and found the nest on the ground where it had been stood on. All I found in the nest was part of a wing.
I feel responsible for this as I made the stupid assumption that our fellow cachers would enjoy seeing a small bit of nature and could be trusted not to interfere with the nest and the nestlings. The cache was nowhere near the nest as stated in the cache description.
As a result the cache has been archived and due to this and other incidents at some of our caches all future Tangles caches are going to be members only."

Why would someone rip the nest down and destroy it? What pleasure does someone get from doing this?

I don't know who did it, but it's pretty sad to read about it as the nest was occupied.

Bloody hell, I hope it wasn't a geocacher that was responsible, but if it was it, maybe they will get publicly outted..... that is the least of what they deserve.

I guess there is no real way of knowing who did it is there? But, I don't think it would have just been found by chance. When it comes to this sort of thing, location-wise, I may rethink where I now take cachers. Maybe some locations are better left as secrets.

Never under-estimate where a bored teen will turn up and what crap they will do there. It may not have been a geocacher. If it was well they are a dick but, IÂ’d say the chance is more 50/50 of a non caching prick.

This is very, very BAD, I hope it was not a cacher who did this, who ever it was Karma will get them in the end.
If this cache was placed far enough out of the way we could say it was not
a bored teen
but perhaps someone else.

The thing I like about Karma is that it means I can do bad things to people and know that they really deserve it.

Could it have been an animal? Were there paw prints or other animal signs about? I am hoping that it is unlikely that even a bored teenager or a rogue cacher would rip the wing off a bird. :(

No, distinctive boot prints were in the sand of the cave.

If I know Tangles well enough he probably has a good idea who it is already. What a sad thing to happen.

The last log was by a new team called Dinoteam.
It certainly wasn't the good lookin' guy in the photo. For the few of us that got to see this amazing bit of nature it was truly amazing. I'd be surprised if teens stumbled across this location, but having said that I didn't cachers could stoop so low....

I don't know the last people to log it after Dave and Odee, so, we cannot assume that it was them. Tangles does have a fair idea, but regardless of who did it, it's very disappointing to see this sort of thing done.

I won't comment on the nest as that may involve the use of the words "lynch" and "mob"

But lets look at the above Tangles statement shall we.

One of our best known and most prolific cachers is going members only.
Now I think that's a bad move in many ways.

I'm no longer a GC.com Premium member so I guess that means I won't be able to do any Tangles caches any more?
As a long standing member of the caching community, I think that sucks. It hurts all the genuine cachers who choose not to be a Premium member for various reasons.
I also presume that members only caches will not appear on GCA either?

I haven't heard for a while, but are there any other members-only caches in Aus?

I guess the members-only caches debate is well and truly open again!

Incorrect presumption, in part.

At the moment, they'll show up here, but only with the "on another site" description, which you won't be able to access.

Still, at least you can see that it exists and ask a friend who's prepared to pay for the gc.com facilities to get you a copy of it.

That is apalling that someone would knock down a nest like that. What a terrible shame. I would hope that it wasn't a geocacher.

Pay per view caches would look something like this on GCA: http://geocaching.com.au/cache/gckvxw
