Glue required for Garmin Legend...?

Post by Zytheran » 10 July 05 10:43 pm

Anyone have any experience with what is the best glue for re-sticking the rubber loop that goes around a Garmin Legend..
Bit annoyed it only lasted 18 months (started coming off after 12 months and about 1 day :x ).

And ..is it common for the hat switch (left, right,up ,down thing) to stop working in a couple of diections 'sometimes'? Been loosing left/right but it seems to come good. Shows up as not working on the power up test but a bit of wiggling comes good... :?

Your best bet is to give Alex a yell (when he is back in country, I think Friday) and spend the $5 for a new one - comes with the sticky stuff and works a treat.

Haven't heard of this problem before. Had to zip downstairs to get my Legend and check it out. Can't find any problem – I got mine in March 2004 – I'll keep checking on it from now on.

I noticed the same prob on the old etrex I gave to my parents too..
On my legend it hasnt happened yet.

Do you use the rubber to fix it between the dash and your windshield? I used to, so maybe that causes it..

Use has been normal. When driving it sits on the rather flat dash but it doesn't do this very often. Most of the time it is in my hand. The glue seems to give up more on hotter days. It was the hot geocaching days in summer where it was first noticed, cooler days it was ok again. Looking at it now I'd say the glue has broken down through a combination of heat and skin oil from my hands. The remaining slime isn't very sticky and the actual rubber has swelled in size causing the looseness. I'd say Garmin have stuffed up using an incompatible adhesive for the 'rubber'. It sure isn't permanent, if it was meant to be.

I damaged my etrex rubber when I came of my bike. I sent it off for repair, and they fixed it under warranty but it never really "stuck" The band has now been slipping for about a year. Got a lot worse over the summer due to sitting up on the dash board.

It's the heat that seems to kill them. Mine sits up on the dash and also has lost its rubber "stickevity". Have got a new one from Alex but havent bothered to install it yet.

The Joysticks are also a known problem, Mine has lost its "up" movement. Don't think I will bother repairing it, just let it die then toss it.

I wonder if the new Colour ones have the same problems ? Might tempt me "not" to buy one again.
I was thinking of grabbing a Colour Vista or Legend.

I've got the legend, no problems with the stick, but the rubber has gone west. I still believe it's my fault for trying to put it in holders that push from the side.

alex, the rocker hat switch on our vista is intermittently failing. is this a user-fixable thing or should we sent it in to garmin?

I don't know, but I'll ask the question tomorrow.

They're like $5 and you can do it yourself in two minutes.

For your $5 (plus postage) you get a new rubber surround and an adhesive strip, both cut to fit the etrex and its buttons. As I don't use an etrex myself I'm not real sure how it actually works in practice but the $68 fee seems a bit like "it will cost you $60 for us to tell you it is an $8 job"... see cached's comment above.
