When I visited this cache sometime ago it contained heaps of goodies. So
its not the result of the hider.

I have been thinking along the lines of when visiting a cache, replacing 1
item with 2. That way the caches should improve and if other hunters
follow suit our caches will become famous.
Not only do I enjoy finding caches, but I enjoy watching the logs of the
hunters after me.
You will find that If this works then some Geocaches will stand out among
others and we will be tempted to travel from far to visit.
We should be looking at preserving our caches and not letting them die and
get left empty in the bush.
harder for them to maintain there caches here. On another note its a good
idea to keep an eye on your own caches. Keep them upto date and then
people dont get annoyed* but if people start putting &quality&
goods back into caches then we shouldnt have to do this......It doesnt
cost a lot of money....cheap &new& things are easily found at $2

Re: RE:Cache contents

I just read this thread, and since it was
my comment which started it all, thought I would put my comments in. I
think it's one of the big problems we have that cache contents are often
rubbish. I've just had a report from one of my caches that it's almost
empty. Looking back over the logs an awful lot of people have said
&Took nothing left nothing&...someone must've taken the stuff. I
will restock it, but I do think all cachers need to have some decent
things to swap. Recently I cleaned out my cupboards and found a whole heap
of toys and things I've never used which I've started putting in caches.

I also think we need to have a few more &theme& caches eg. The
You Yangs Library Stash - this tells you the sort of thing you need to put
in it.

Bunnies and Beyond may also have been plundered by non-cachers. It's
pretty out in the open there.
Agree with quasar that empty or near empty
caches are not always the fault of cachers. Mary and I have already come
across several caches, not always in popular spots either, where the logs
show chance finds by non-cachers, often in lurid language. Once
non-sympathetic people find a cache, they can easily keep coming back if
there is good stuff being put in. I suspect once this happens, the only
solution would be to move the cache.

We always make an effort to swap something of equal-ish value to what we

minority that are spoiling things for the rest of us, which is always a
risk in a game run using an honour system.

Re: WHAT is WRONG ( long post)

Well. Yes it is always dissapointing to
find that once a cache is tracked down, the contents are , how should we
put it? disapointingly bad in proportion to the effort you took to make
the find. I'm reminded of a particular team finding a container with only
a leaf in it, after a 1200Km flight, and a 1 hour limosine ride into the
South Australian country side!

Perhaps, circumstance, and peoples financial situations are influencing
this. As you all know, this is an open activity, no memerships, or
registrtions are required, and because of this, its open to a lot more
people to have a go at, for relatively little cost. And teams and players
are not bound to spend anything on this activity if they do not wish to,
Infact it seems to be the reverse. the more involved yuoui get, the more
you spend. on eqiopment, transport, and travel!!!
( Im up for a $6K overhaul of GEO-80Y right now)

So I'd hate to scare away the new starters who, are at least making an
effort to participate, by complaining about locations, contents, or
quality.

So heres a few pointer from My experience in maintaining quality
geocaches...

1. Before placing your first cache, read all the HOW -TO's on the
geocaching.com website. they contain guidelines for content, and
containers ood for starters.

2. You dont always have to spend big $ to find cool and wierd content, or
containers. As many of you will know, many of the GeoMonkeys cache
containers are good quality, and i rarly spend more than a couple of
dollars on them. Infact I now get most of my containers and content form
the following sources, at surprisingly little cost...

A: Recycling/disposal centres: there are many of
these &reverse garbage& centres in Most states.
you go there to pick through other peoples junk, and
pay, sometimes by the hessian bag full, a small cost to
do so. I recently purchased a dozen containers, including
a 30Ltr Barrel ( as seen at Barrel-o-Monkeys II) for $5.00
fom the local reverse garbage depot.

B: Church, and community fete's and fairs:
Always great for cheap contents, and again containers
I picked up about 100 good condition ex-Take away
promo toys, and little things in a bag for only $1, and
containers were abundant, at 20c each for Tupperware,
decor, and the likes, and old cake and biscuit tins.

C Local garage sales... need we say more!

D The$2 GO-LO, Crazy-everthing must go-store!
Im considering going into business with a chain of
these types of stores, and calling them...
GEOCAHERS PARDISE. contents, and containers. You
can put together a whole cache for about $10. And
who here on this board hasnt?

So I think you can see that with a little effort, and perhaps a bit of
paint and polish, Your caches cna become quality at a low cost. No one
expects you to spend even tens of dollars, unless yo want to , putting
together a cache.

Perhaps after reading this, people will be inspired, not nfuriated, to go
out and perhaps upgrade thier contents, and containers, next time they do
a check of thier caches. and Hey! we all should be doing this anyway to
make sure no one is dissapointd by an empty cache anyway.

Thanks for listnening, I know, I go on a little... so Ive stated a new FAQ
for this discussion too. see the FAQ sections.
trust my relative newbie point of views are taken in context. Feel free to
steer me in a direction that's more in line with general consensus if I've
missed the mark ...

1) People are talking about the value of items, and there are differing
opinions on how one measures value. And there should be. At Mattsell said,
one person's trash (or traysh, if we're rhyming for the different
pronunciation

) is another's treasure. I do agree that leaves, chocolate wrappers,
bottle tops are woeful excuses for swaps, especially if the cacher takes
something &nicer& (I'd rather not use the term &more
valuable&). I personally take pride in leaving at least as good an
item or items as I take. It's not hard to build up a collection of
reasonable items.

2) Price. There is no excuse for really dodgy items (ie & $2). If you
can afford a GPSr, a tank of fuel (or bus ticket), a packet of batteries
and so on, then you can afford to visit the $2 shop every now and then.

3) Took nothing, left nothing. This seems to happen more often than it
should. I understand that people do go on impromptu searches without their
kit, but if you carry, for example, an unused phonecard in your wallet,
you'll always have something to swap. A little forethought goes a long way

4) Be honest. There's a lot of trust in this game. Nuff said.

I feel like I'm preaching to the converted here. Oh well, I'll post this
in the interests of constructive discussion.

Cheers,
But have to disagree with you on one point. THe Took Nothing Left nothing
I think you have missed the point about what Geocaching is about(well for
me) . TO share a region with the other players of this game. The swapping
of goodies in a cache is a bonus.

I don't know about everyone else but the placing af a cache for us is also
part of the game, to show off an area that has special meaning for us. In
my case all the caches I have put down show the blue mountains off, areas
I use to hike in as a scout, or visit with my parents regularly.

For myself and my family it is the thrill of the chase and the finding of
the cache. We have visited so many areas that we never knew existed and
would never have visited.AT times I have had to leave the Backpack of
Goodies with the family while I continue onto find the cache, there may be
a safety reason I have done this or a time factor involved, just depends
on circumstances. Or all the items in my backpack are too large to go into
the cache. I do try to replace with quality items where possible, but have
been disappointed in arriving at a cache only to find in it nothing that
appeals to me, so I take nothin, but leave my mark in the Log, or add
something more worth while.
Good point Swampgecko. I guess since
there's no great harm to the game by doing no swap, it's fair to leave it

I certainly agree that the primary point of caching is for the interesting
locations.

Cache contents

Post by aandm » 10 May 03 7:48 pm

It is sad and rather disheartening when cache owners put in a lot of effort to make a cache worth visiting and then to have it stolen or removed by person's unknown. We checked on the first cache we ever placed today and found it gone. Our second cache which we gave an Aussie theme to and collected a lot of Aussie stuff for (even going so far as to asking the local Woolies store where they got their Australian flags from) for Australia Day in honour of my father's birthday also disappeared. This hasn't deterred us from placing any more caches but remember that cache owners do generally put a lot of thought and effort into the contents of their caches.
Just a final question to ponder...If you owned the cache you had just found would you want to find some of the contents that others had put in, in your cache?
