GPS Reciever Poll
GPS Reciever Poll
Just out of curiosity, can someone set up a poll to see what type of GPS everyone uses? I'd be interested to see which is the most popular used here in Australia...
Ok GeoJo
I have taken the liberty here to try out some of my moderator powers with your intial post and create a poll on the favourite Satellite Interface systems that we use for geocaching
Swampgecko

Ok I have created the requested poll.
I use a Garmin 12 for all my geocaching needs, for the time being anyway. I am looking at getting a Megellan Platinium/Gold/Colour in the future. the map support for Australia seems to be a lot better from Megellan than it does from Garmin
Mostly Magellan, initially a 315 with a bit of 300 & 310. Now I use a Meridian with South Australia loaded though I still often use the my trusty old 315 as well.
In the name of product research I have occasionally also used MLR SP24, Garmin eTrex, Garmin Geko 101 & 201, eMap, 12XL, Sportrak, Meridian Platinum & Colour... and a Street Pilot III.
BTW Magellan have just released their new Austrlia-wide mapping to replace their former state based CDs. Its called DiscoverAus...RRP $249.70. ... available from Carto Graphics of course!

We started off with a Garmin GPS12, and recently took the opportunity to upgrade. We were specifically after a unit with an electronic compass, and narrowed it down to a Magellan Meridian Platinum and a Garmin eTrex Vista. Ended up deciding on the Magellan, as it was a little cheaper and had better Australian map support, and buying overseas was a huge saving on local prices Yet another team with a foot in both camps!!
I have two Garmins. The eMap for all it's mapping goodness. Then I have the very newly acquired Geko 201 for when I am going places where it is likely to get wet or dropped. With me the chances of it getting dropped are high. I'm only new to it but am very happy with the Garmins. Also owned by HardUnits members is a Garmin GPS72. We are very much a Garmin team. Nothing against any other brand, we just like Garmins.

I chose the Garmin etrex base model (yellow fellow) mainly because it was cheap, and because it is popular and so there are mods and stuff available.
I have made two of my own cables using pfranc plugs. One data cable for my computer, and one power supply for car use. The latter was made for a sum total of less than $8.50. The plug for the etrex was $7.50. I bought a generic mobile phone cigarette lighter adapter from Tricky Dicks for 87 cents! (Cheaper than getting a plug by itself) The circuit was just the right switchmode type that needed just one resister change to get the voltage to 3V. The resister I had in my junk box, but I will count it as 10 cents to get the total. I actually made the thing while I was camping at the beach at Christmas time, using a 12V soldering iron.
I will post links for more info if anyone is interested. It's too late to look for them now.
