Color or Mono Screen? Which Do You Prefer for GeoCaching?

Post by Lucanos » 13 March 05 10:06 am

Just a quick poll of my fellow AussieCachers...

Have you had experience with both Color & Mono Screen GPS Units?

If so, have you found the Color or the Mono screen easier to use for GeoCaching?

Further, what unit(s) are you basing this on?

I've only ever used a Magellan 2000 XL (first GPS which does not get used now but I still got) and an basic Etrex. So for colour I've never seen one

Once you go Black you never go back.

"A distinctive blend of Ceylon and other fine teas enhanced by the subtle scent of the citrus oil of Bergamot. This Black Earl Grey Tea is a delicate balance of flavour and fragrance."

Hmmm - Lovely.

The Bronze.
"Well it might be a spoonful of coffee
Might be a spoonful of tea
Just a little spoon of your precious love
Good enough for me".
Spoonful - Lyrics/Music: Willie Dixon

Colour... but that's because it's an IPAQ

Post by Partic » 13 March 05 10:22 am

Using a (now dated) IPAQ 3630 with GPS jacket, I've got colour due to the IPAQ having colour.
Having caught up with a few other geocachers at recent picnics in Sydney and Melbourne, it comes down to more features other than the colour (and size) of your screen.

Aspects such as waypoint selection, software tools, navigation routing etc I think all matter more. By using UBD maps on my IPAQ, colour seperates out the features of the maps, but at times that can also be a hinderance when you misdiagnose what the feature may actually be.

Even though I have never used a colour screen on GPS I have seen them operationg in a few stores in melbourne. Even though they look all nice I think the mono screen offers a much more reliable read out in direct sunlight.

I have a colour screen mobile phone and its honestly hopeless in direct sunlight..

I've just upgraded recently from a B&W to a colour screen. It sure is nice, but its by no means vital to my caching success. I haven't had too big a problem reading it in direct sunlight, however the B&W probably was a bit better in that regard.

having gone from a black screen to a colour - you never notice how good the colour is until you use one that is black again - and it isn't a patch.

For caching - yeah, maybe its' here or there, but for the mapping - the colour is magic.

Agreed Cached

To comment that the colour is not as good as mono and vice versa you really need to try them for yourself and not rely on judgements based on no experience  I find that my colour GPS is great when displaying maps with higher detail than normal eg. bluecharts (Garmin) looks and works fantastic on my GPSr as compared to my (older) mono GPSr.

Agsmky.
