GPS Dedication

Post by Lt. Sniper » 01 February 05 1:57 am

Sorry DJcache for bringing this up :)
He posted this in the Magellan Meridian Yahoo! Group...
Call me crazy but I took mine on a waterslide to see how fast I went at a
mini theme park on holidays.

I dare say the 25-30kmh imersion at the end created higher pressures than a
normal dunking.

Several runs averaging 25.8 kmh and no water ingress.

I'm happy.

Dave
I know my Magellan Meridian Platinum (same as yours) is waterproof since I have taken it into all sort of water extremes and I also know that taking it on a water slide is the funniest thing I have ever heard someone do with a GPS.

Would You Do It?
With a Toshiba E750 Pocket PC and a bluetooth GPS mouse... I don't think so.

Go the Garmin GPSmap76S. It Floats!! That's why we got one. I figured, what point is there having a waterproof GPS if it's only going to sink to the bottom? The 76S was designed for boating and as far as I know it's the only one that floats.

Not so. A Meridian floats too.

I wanted to see if it would go faster on its own but the ride operator wasn't keen on me taking it while holding it. A loose missile was definately not going to cut it.

Maybe he wasn't keen on it going on its own as it would have been unsupervised - and even standing on its end it was a meter too short to be allowed on the ride on its own :(

Oh and don't be disappointed if you aren't the owner of a waterproof GPSr. The speed challenge is for the luge/toboggan thingy. The water slide is very optional.

The interesting thing is that for parts of the waterslide it goes through a fibreglass tunnel and the tunnel is bedded into the hillside with a very thin layer of dirt on top - and I had sat reception all the way down! Go Magellan! :P

Laugh all you like, it was a hell of a lot of fun, it amused me for a while and at the end of it all I didn't have tu buy a new GPS

My Etrex survived Claustral canyon without an extra waterproofing - and things were pretty wet for several hours ;)

There were times when I would have liked to have drowned my Magellan2K, but that a whole different story

Once Iam ready to replace my extrex I might give that a go. It claims to be waterproof, but for how deep??? Just makes me wonder.

Or is it just smart enough to make up the estimated route. Did it log multiple corners underground? If it was just a straight route under ground I'm not surprised. Even one corner under ground could be estimated by the software.

Any body tested how far underwater a GPSr will receive?
Edit ---serious question - I havn't tryed it.

The flap at the top of my etrex that covers the data port, is well and truely coming away, the rubber bit forms the waterproofing cover for the join, each time we open it up to use it in the car, a bit more of it comes unstuck.

Is it waterproof anymore? I highly doubt it.

Mine is worn out in the same way because of me jamming the Etrex against the window and dash in my car. The glue has all come off and it got a duck in the water just last week. Its still working perfectly..

What can I say RAM Etrex Mount stuck on windscreen with maxi suction cup.

RAM Mounts

I'm pretty sure Johnny Appleseed has them in Australia.

Their PDA and laptop mounts are fantastic too.

I had the kids at school wanting to pitch my eTrex to see how fast they could throw - I declined even after they offered to wrap it in bubble wrap!

As far as water goes - no prob! I'm game.

Would you do it? II

Hmmm. Other potentially disastrous or dumb things I have done with my GPS.

Put it in the front of a remote control scale glider to track path, speed and distance from pilot at which glider becomes too small in the sky to fly comfortably.....

Answers over 200kmh, 26km in one 35min flight and 840m from slope edge. Oh and once we were out 400ish metres from the slope we were flying over water 80+m deep!

Do floating MeriPlats still float with glider wreckage which includes several kg of battery and noseweight weighing it down still float?? I doubt it but I never had to find out....

Oh. Gliders varied between 5 & 7 metre wingspan.

See Soaring on a breeze for the location and some pics of models.

One day I'll try something and it'll all go horribly wrong. It's all fun & games till someones GPS gets hurt
