Some of the vitriol contained in the gc.com forum was pretty scary - but one post summed it up pretty well:

I was going to give them a very eloquent spray - but they've closed the topic and said they will close any other topics about this cache - So much for the "land of the free"...

2 pages of posts and one worked that out. That's average.

No - it's definitely been closed... Don't worry - I've tried... :-)

Just contemplating creating a new topic full of graphic photos from the disaster... and a few choice comments...

Hmmm... I don't think that there's much doubt that this disaster warrants anything that can encourage donations to relief agencies.

But how about a flood in Pakistan that kills 20,000 people? Still worthy enough?

A typhoon that kills 1,500 people in the Caribbean? Still sufficiently 'special case'?

A train wreck that kills 500 in Somalia?

A collapsing viewing platform that kills a school group of 50?

My brother's bicycle accident that broke his bike, his leg and his eTrex?

Where do you draw the line?

Maybe all the "finds" can be changed to notes and show that it wasnt about the numbers???

Think about it

I was pretty shocked that it would even enter someone's head that I would make a charitable donation just so I could log a cache find, so I have already changed mine to a note...

To me this cache appeal was a prompt from a community that I belong to... nothing more...

And Hell... if you can get a smiley for breaking the law by speeding - why not from this cache???

I don't blame you for resigning Embi... gc.com has overstepped the mark...

If you are a regular reader of the GC.com forums you will recognize many of the posters as regular stirrers, so a grain of salt is needed. Unfortunately, the "guidelines" are a touchy subject for many, and a nerve was hit.

Riblit knew that he was on the edge by approving the cache, though I am sure that he (and the other Aussie reviewers) had no idea of the reaction it would cause. I wish embi had not resigned.

I applaud Team Piggy for doing something positive. Give if you can, and don't forget your local charities!

I tell you what, I'm glad they closed the thread, I was getting a bit fired up reading their US-Centric views.

As someone said... there was a thing done for Sept 11.....

Hmmmm... makes you think...

exactly - We had already made a donation, this cache was simply a means of doing so as a member of the Australian geocaching community. Other organisations I belong to dangle a bucket from time to time. We donate as a member of the organisation irrespective of a personal donation made.

Keep hitting refresh, sometimes that throws petrol on their server, other times, it actually works. :)
