GPS protocol: The next week number rollover next year

Post by MavEtJu » 12 April 18 9:31 am

From https://ics-cert.us-cert.gov/sites/defa ... S_2019.pdf:

In the GPS protocol, the week number field is a ten bit value. So every 1024 weeks it will return to zero.

Week 0 is 5 January 1980. And 21 August 1999. And will be 6 April 2019.

So don't be surprised if your GPS will display the wrong date next year.

Geepers! The geocaching community may well experience Y2K type hysteria on the lead up to April 6th next year!

Crikey. I use GPS a lot on sites for clock syncing. Might have to do some reading up

I'm sure the firmware/software in GPS units and smartphones managing the GPS chip and functions will take care of this.
