Huangshan Geopark (GCA invades China)

Post by Zalgariath » 20 October 16 2:38 pm

On our trip to China this year the fiancee took me to one of the most spectacular places I've ever been, Huangshan. Direct translation is "The Yellow Mountains" and while there is a lonely Earth Cache there I came across something much more exciting... trigs! The whole area is covered with GPS markers so I decided to list as many of these are I can and throw in a small series of 5 virtual GCA caches to highlight some of the best spots.

Not going to lie, getting there is tricky and if you go in peak season it will be crowded. However if even one person is inspired to make the trek as part of a caching holiday that would be a massive win. If not... I got to FTF 9 more trigs ;) There are many more I missed so plenty of options to FTF other trigs too :P

Check out the link below and click on the map (use OSM) to see what is on offer. I believe it is the largest collection of trigs outside Oceania listed on GCA.

God, I'm terrified just looking at the pictures. Nicely done!

"I" have one in the USA which is nearly 5 years unfound.

I think your numbers beat mine though.

Ok, I have to ask... How did that rock get there?

Its a glacial "Erratic". Erratics are stones plucked by moving ice and transported to new locations as the glacier slides slowly along. Sometimes this can be many kilometres. This boulder would have been plucked during the last ice age when the whole Huangshan area was under an ice sheet. As the ice melted, this one happened to end up balanced on its long end, right next to a 150m drop off a cliff! There are numerous earth caches that I've done that taught me about these wayward stones... who'd have thought a cache could be educational! :P

Ah, I've done many earthcaches at Erratics - but none of them have looked anywhere near as impressive as that though!
