To be clean for the forums... "Oh Bother!" ... Not my exact thoughts though

I remembered after reading this that some time ago I did get an email re licensing. Turns out I did accept at the time, however I suspect I know someone who didn't, as the area around me has also gone to pot:
http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=-34.5 ... ayers=B0FT
http://goo.gl/maps/dUxJ

4 or 5 years ago, I was in touch with the main contributor for my region (and large sections of Regional NSW/SA between me and Adelaide), and she did huge amounts of work. From what I can see, I can only assume she missed the email, or declined the license, and we're back to not far off of square one!

Being lazy and not researching this much, CraigRat, do you (or anyone else here) know if there is any process in place for reinstating "redacted" works? If I can track down a former contributor and get them to accept, can they reinstate their data? I suspect it is more likely what I'm already fearing, in that they've gone with "they had their chance, and now the redaction bot has just been through and deleted" ...

All very depressing! Maybe the Google contribution model will gain legs? (hopefully not from an Open perspective) I'm thinking OSM was possibly a one-off good shot at getting such a thing done, and a lot is now wasted... I know I wouldn't be going back and redoing anything on the scale of what I can see has been deleted... Such a shame.

Looks like the planet file is 2 weeks old (I'm assuming that's before the culling) if you feel like having a 21GB bandwidth hit.

Does anyone have the .img file for Tasmania before the culling? I have all the other states after visiting each of them over the last few years but my Tassie trip is in a few months and i hadn't got the map dowloaded yet. But not the routable version, just the .img one

My bat senses must have been tingling, as I downloaded all the routable maps from OSM Australia. Happy to upload somewhere if someone has a hosting site or something, to share to all.

Are they too big for a Google Doc ? That might violate the terms of agreement for that too I guess.

That would be brilliant if we were able to do that somewhere. After a night's sleep I decided to do similarly only to discover this morning they've all been 'updated' to the crap set as of 20 July.

I'm afraid you wont be the only one. This will be a true turning pooint for OSM. It will either wither and die or people will step up and redo a heap of the work. I'm sad to say it may just be the first option...

Thank you soooo much, it is exactly what I wanted. I only use the .img files as it takes up less memory, and I prefer to use the gps this way too. I'm a simple person when it comes to technology :)

Bugger... I just tracked down the account of the user in question, and it appears she consciously declined the new license...
http://www.openstreetmap.org/user/drlizau/diary/13560 (not sure if reading Diaries requires an OSM logon, i suspect it does though)

Such a loss. I notice NearMap have already moved to a new provider of roadmap detail...

What's the contentious issue in the new licence? To make someone throw away such a lot of work, she must have had a strong objection.

I assume you can legitimately post them in a public space for people to download?

I might try to do it from my google account. Give me a day or so. :)

Strangely, SA country areas seem to be unaffected. They weren't that great to begin with but all the main roads are still intact...
