This FOUND log popped up on a cache I DNFed a couple of weeks ago (and have been watching since)

Log Date: 9/29/2011
Could feel the cache with the tips of my fingers. Any attempt to retrieve failed. Container is non-ferrous as my magnetic extraction tool would not grab it. I couldn't find a long enough stick to push it out the other way. Maybe a keyring should be attached to it in the future to make retrieval easier.

I've obviously been doing it wrong for nearly 8 years

I've always operated under the premise that you had to retrieve the cache and actually write in the logbook/logsheet to log a find

It is fairly cut and dried. I actually have this at hand as I sent it to someone recently who claimed a find on one of my caches without signing the log as they could not get close enough due to muggles.

Physical geocaches can be logged online as "Found" once the physical log has been signed.

Never assume that they meant to log it as a find. They may have selected found from the drop down as a matter of habit. I would give them the benefit of the doubt, unless they have a track record.

I have done this once (cant remember which cache), somewhere back in the first 100 ... but have since "seen the light".

Fairly regularly, I get an email with a "Owner: [cacher] found [your cache]" and something like "Searched for ages, couldn't find it"

So, I give my knickers a twist and saddle up the high horse, Hough, and go riding off on it to the listing, only to find that they've changed it to a DNF or note, having made the innocent and common error of defaulting to a "found it" log without thinking.

Only very rarely has it been a deliberate false claim of a smiley, and even more rarely has anyone argued when asked to remove or edit the log type.

Speaking of logging ... I found an FTF this morning... sort of ... when I got back to the laptop I found the cache was "offline". What is the ettiquette in this situation?

I feel bad, but dont want to give up an FTF either?

Last year I found some caches in Europe and added them to my watch list.
One of them disappeared recently, and most people seem to say, found where it should be but its gone, and log a find.

I found one here last week where the owner logged a find on their own cache.

Too bad for the owner, IMHO. It's been published and is in place, so open slather. I don't believe in reserving a cache in this manner. It probably should have been left unpublished until the day.

By 25/11 I would hope one of the reviewers would flag it as needing attention for being disabled too long!

That was theUMP's fault. The owner did ask for a November publish, but there were other issues in between and that salient fact got lost...

Don't fell bad. Consider yourself lucky. Just because the cache is disabled (or archived) does not mean it cannot be found if it is there. It is not like you replaced a disabled cache with your own just to get a find.

Feel lucky that the cache is actually there. With a request for a future publication date, the cache may not have been in place. That would have been fun

Shame, Shame you should drive back to the cache immediately and remove your log, place the FTF prize on ebay and
donate the money to charity, write 5,000 times I will never do an unpublished cache again, and buy every cacher at the
Halls Gap event a Coffee, Cake, Chocolate Tim Tam, and a Sambuca (does have a C in the name). OR just between you and me only dont tell anyone, by
the time the page gets to 20 logs you cant see the FTF on the first page..lol
